Players make the plays but coaching puts people in the the right position to make them.

We are 2nd in the Nation in sacks. It's been so obvious and fun Pitt will dictate what happens instead of being passive.

We are 4th in total defense.
4th in fewest penalty yards. This is surely good coaching.
2nd in punt return tds. It seemed like we went years between special team tds.
#1 for allowing 4th down conversions and the number is zero. This is a sign we are bringing pressure and keeping teams way off schedule.

A lot of season to go but if the trend continues,I can't believe any brand new coach makes this kind of impact historically. There is a lot of local d backs that have to look at Pitt as a way to Prep for the NFL if they see what we are doing and being honest with players we recruit.

Our defense honestly looks like the "blitzburgh" d that was so fun to watch with the Steelers from a decade ago with obviously less talent. It's certainly fun to watch and one feels like we are defense that makes things happen.

I'm optimistic too. I have always liked the Duzzi defense, and honestly I think MSU is missing him even though the guys that took his place were mentored.by him. Something is missing there this year and I think it's Narduzzi. I also believe the big problem with OSU's offense this year versus last is that Tom Herman isn't calling it loss of a great coordinator can have a big impact.

With us. I am taking it game by game. It was easy to be blitz happy against VT with Motley, as he is no threat to hurt you downfield. Combining no vertical passing threat with tough field conditions our D had the advantage big time in that one. It was refreshing to see us use it for a change. .

Looking forward to seeing how we do week to week. But I am very worried about that offense. There are some concerning red flags there.

All done in 8 months from New Unproven Coaching Staff that Chryst & Staff could not do in 3 years and the Pitt coaches want even more improvement?:rolleyes:o_O:D:eek::cool:;):)

Have we taken an actual bad penalty yet? A stupid one? A selfish one? He'll I don't even remember a holding call but I am sure we have some

Here's what I got from ESPN's NCAAF stats.

Pitt is:

3rd in total defense
4th in total yards allowed per game
4th in rushing yards allowed and rush yards per game
Tied for 9th in total sacks
17th in defensive efficiency

I seem to remember at least 4 that were taken on purpose to take a full punt or draw the other team offsides. Not one really bad penalty just stuff that happens on every play and it was called.

--For the entire season last year we had 19 sacks for 133 yards; this season we already have 17 sacks for 145 yards.

--For the entire season last year we had 54 tackles for losses for 254 yards; this season we already have 33 tackles for losses for 191 yards.

Be interesting to see what Pitt can sustain as teams make adjustments...

(BTW, between the East Carolina game and the PItt game, Coach Beamer's got to be feeling some pressure... He seems like a good guy -- I hope they hang with him until he decides he's done.)

Go Pitt.

Matt House is wondering how this is all possible.
