- The 2024 Pitt offense has finally entered into the 21st century. I for one, am very happy to see this happen. I have been on this website for years complaining about how slow and conservative the Pitt offense looked. I've watched schools like UCF come out of nowhere and blow by the Pitt program in terms of popularity and excitement. Why did this happen? It happened because the Pitt coaching staff wanted to try to play "professional style" football. Pitt wanted to win games by running the ball, playing good defense and kick FG's. The 13-9 win at WVU was exactly what they wanted. The problem is, in college football of this century, unless you are a Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, ND, even a psu..., you need to win and win as big as possible to draw the attention of the pollsters to your program. Pitt could win every game on their regular schedule this year by one point and wouldn't crack the Top 10 until after game 12. A school like psu SHOULD drop out of the Top 10 for their performance yesterday. ND should be out of the Top 20 after yesterday, neither will happen. Pitt needs to gout and put as many POINTS on the board as possible each week. They do not only have to win, they need to gain votes as well.
- The Pirates have done what I said they would do before the year started. The only difference between this year and the recent past is they have a MLB Super Star in Paul Skenes. Because of Skenes and all of the attention that he brings (that includes Livvy Dunne's following) the Pirates found themselves in a position where they had to make it look like they wanted to win some meaningful games this year. Other then Reynolds and Cruz, the Pirates are hard pressed to put a real MLB lineup on the field for each game. The additions of Kiner-Falefa and De La Cruz do nothing. They already have multiple players on the team like those two already. The Pirates again tried to do it the "cheap way" and it failed. We need to enjoy Paul Skenes now, because it about 2-3 years, he will be gone.
- How in the world can the people Pitt and the Pirates not be able to work something out for the games they play on September 14th? I mean, you will have roughly 65,000-70,000 at the Pitt WVU game. You will have at least 15,000-20,000 at the Pirates game (more if Skenes is pitching). There will be a period of time where you will have at least 80,000-85,000 people at one time in that little piece of property on the North Side of Pittsburgh. WHY??? It hurts both teams and makes driving to and attending the games less enjoyable. Quite frankly it is asinine and both entities should be ashamed of themselves.
- I am shocked at how Yinzers have turned their back on Kenny Pickett. They guy did all that he could do at Pitt and even tried to do the same with the Steelers. Make NO MISTAKE about it, Mike Tomlin and Matt Canada are directly responsible for ruining the NFL career of Pickett. I heard Tomlin said it many times in interviews, how they were going to keep the offensive play calling very conservative to help Pickett run the team. Well that is exactly what they did. The short little passes to the RB's and WR's, the constant focus on trying to run the ball down the other teams throat, did not work. They had a terrible OL that nearly got Pickett killed. There was little interest in throwing to the TE's and even less interest in throwing the ball downfield to a guy like George Pickens. They fire Canada and bring in the two clowns to call plays and the offense was slightly better. Was that Rudolph's doing or the different guys calling the plays? The reality of it is, Tomlin is the HC and he should be held accountable for what happened to Pickett. Tomlin should have been fired.
- Tomlin brought in Russell Wilson to be his starting QB, why? Offensive guru's like Pete Carroll and Sean Payton kicked him to the curb. There was a reason why they did this to Wilson and Tomlin is just to arrogant enough to think they were wrong. My money is on Caroll and Payton. The addition of Justin Fields is just another error by Tomlin and his arrogant approach to coaching the average NFL program that the Steelers have become.
- The reality of professional sports in Pittsburgh is, they (with the exception of the Penguins) have all become CHEAP. In a conservative, old folks town (not in a political sense) like Pittsburgh, people don't like to spend their money on things they don't understand or things that are new and flashy. We have all heard the Yinzers say things like "Why spend half a billion dollars on a stadium that will be used 6 times a year?"
If the folks a the University of Pittsburgh had that same attitude back in the 1920's, the Cathedral of Learning would not be present today. Did Pitt have a need to spend $12 million dollars in 1920 (when adjusted for 2024, that would be over $15 BILLION dollars today) to build a 53 foot tall building on its campus??? Obviously we are all glad they did, because the Cathedral of Learning is an amazing historic structure that we all love. Just think what a state of the art on campus football field could do for the school and its athletic programs. Open up your purses Pittsburgh, let's continue to grown!
- Lastly, to my friend SMF...the sport of soccer that you seem to love continues to have more flaws then ever. Watched the Summer Olympics and even some EPL games so far this year and I have seen more goals taken away because of that foolish offsides rule then I have seen scored.
