“We’ve been really good at times, but not to be confused with great,” Tomlin said. “We are trying to position ourselves to be that team. We have a player with talent who hasn’t had an opportunity to play. So we are going to potentially explore those things. Sometimes it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with what Justin has done or has not done.”

“At times, we have gotten open. At times, we haven’t,” Tomlin said of the team’s pass catchers. “That’s just a function of football. Say what you will about that.”

The contrasting similarities meld together in a familiar yet unique situation.

It is genuinely impressive that he's been the coach here for almost 20 years and has said nothing of value to the media in that time. Narduzzi should take notes!

Haha. And he certainly doesn’t run from a camera or microphone and have his handlers protect him unlike some other high profile people. That’s because he speaks well, and is bright. Unlike others.

But I completely get what he’s saying. And maybe it’s because I listened to the presser and understand the context because I heard the question. Basically he’s saying Justin has been fine but we want to be better than just fine so we are going to explore using players that might be able to take them to a different level.

Seems pretty clear .
The job was always Russell’s and fields hasn’t run away to secure it.
So options are open .

He’s just more eloquent than most coaches.
Only a dope talks in black and white to the press .

Sounds like the James Franklin great vs elite presser.

Greatest orator since Oswald Bates....

I think a dope talks on circles that don't make any sense. Throw in a few big words and dummies think you're smart.
How about a dope who speaks in circles, says nothing, sounds ridiculous and then dummies still think they’d do the job well because they check the box of the day?

And no I’m not talking about Mike. Lol.

Well, all of the passive aggressive nonsense aside, is it really a good idea to inject chaos into your club a third of the way into the season? Logically, why wait until this week if QB1 was ready to go last week? Why would you not want the guys who has been starting to take the next couple of "easy" games to make some adjustments and work on what they're trying to do? Is Fields playing badly on film?

This is where our local media blows. They just take notes and publish the quote. No follow up. No digging for any sort of insight. They just let him vomit half sentences all over the podium every week and never really get Tomlin to explain himself. I guess it's possible he'll have another hissy fit and storm off but isn't that something more interesting to cover?

What’s the mystery ?
We are only averaging 20 PPG because our qb can’t throw for over 150 yards a game consistently ?
We have a veteran qb who was announced as the starter since he signed .
He’s healthy now .
Fields didn’t win the job - he did what a backup is supposed to do- not lose games with his play .
The Steelers want winning plays from the offense .

He was healthy last week. That doesn't explain why it took another week.

this is a 1000% correct.

Come on... the guy is less than mediocre, we have an absolute elite defense, that is why we are winning. Im no Russell Wilson fan, but obviously he should be the QB

Bill bellichek said that you don’t make a QB change unless you’re 100% certain that QB#2 is better.

So we should feel extremely confident about the decision to go with Wilson. Or…Tomlin is jus throwing darts at the wall.

Well the problem with that is that Wilson was never really QB2. He was always going to be QB1 from the day that he signed, no matter who else was here competing for the job. And now that they have decided he is fully healthy he gets his job back.

Keeping Fields as the starter would actually be changing to QB2.

Fields is qb #2.
You understand that right ?

What do Russell Wilson and Winston Churchill have in common?
Neither can move out of the pocket well and with the porous Oline, that presents a problem.

The qb who can compete passes across the whole field may make that a moot point .

When that happens let me know. When Wilson signed with the Steelers I predicted he would not start or finish 10 games. The guy is the QB equivalent of sloppy seconds. He relied on his legs and now that they are gone, he is nothing.
Remember, Wilson threw one of the worst INTs in the history of the NFL. Any good QB would have checked out of that play or not thrown into such tight coverage. But Wilson didn’t read the coverage and couldn’t see over the rear ends of his linemen: the rest is history.

Guess we’ll see if he has anything left in the tank .
He threw for 3k yards , 26 TDs vs 8INT just last year
So - maybe he’s better ?

Fields in his best year threw for 2.5k yards , 16 TD vs 9 INTS
The old man is a far better qb

We were lead to believe that he was available for the game so I'm not sure why they wouldn't have practiced him and played him.
You can just reread my post .
Not sure why you need spoon fed instead of using a bit of logic

Logic? This goes back to what I said about Tomlin spouting garbage and people just accepting it like it's fine, which is kind of the whole point of the thread, right?

1. The anointed QB1 (who wasn't necessarily the QB1 based on the direction the wind was blowing) is healthy enough to play.
2. Team doesn't practice QB1 as the starter even though they had a bas loss the previous week and he's supposedly read to go.
3. The alleged QB2 starts and has a pretty bad game but wins with his legs and some help from the officials.
4. HC kind of says the QB2 didn't do anything wrong but takes backhanded shots at QB2 and the WR's and hints the QB1 might start.
5. Everyone just sort of sits there on their hands and don't press HC to elaborate or ask why they are waiting or what really changed.
6. It's now Thursday and nobody knows who is starting other than it's apparent that the alleged QB1 is taking first team reps.

I know it's instinct for the locals to never press a Steelers HC to explain his position but it's kind of a big deal to swap out QB's on a 4-2 team. Especially when you've flip-flopped over whether or not there was a presumptive QB1 or not, which the media really hasn't bothered to point out, and you're heading into a couple of games that should be easy.

these weekly press conferences with football coaches have turned into just parody. Im sure in a time long long ago, they actually had value, when there were such things as newspapers and real journalists and media members. when people actually got home from work and read the newspapers to see what's going on in the world..

but yeah, those days are gone. even 20 years ago, cowher would go on and just try and be a tough guy and intimidate media members asking questions and that was amusing for a bit. but these coaches now, they dont want to be there, the media doesnt want to be there, the fans already know everything there is to know and the little bit that they want to know, they arent getting from these questions.

So we have what we have now, and it's just a skit, a charade where everyone mocks everyone just because if they dont, the nfl will fine them. and it used to be funny to watch but anymore, it's just dumb..

time to end these weekly conferences, just have the teams release a press release with the vague injury reports and call it a day..
