** We all know the names. Cassius Winston. Tony Carr. Kevin Marfo. Maverick Rowan. Mustafa Heron. Xavier Simpson. Myles Powell. Lamar Stevens. Dylan Painter.

** The list of potential Panther Hoops recruits for 2016 who have chosen to go elsewhere lately is certainly discouraging. It’s probably more than that. It’s downright depressing.

** And that’s just the list from just this summer. If you go back further, it gets much, much more disheartening.

** But there’s another list I hope to discuss this evening. That list is … Mike Young. Jamel Artis. James Robinson. Sheldon Jeter. Chris Jones. Ryan Luther. Cameron Johnson. Damon Wilson. Rafeal Maia. Jonathan Milligan. Alonzo Nelson-Ododa. Sterling Smith. Rozelle Nix.

** When thinking about this group, I’ve started to feel pretty good about the coming season. I like the possibilities that the list above can provide. I challenge my fellow Pitt Hoop fans to feel the same way. In fact, I dare you!

** Make no mistake. I’m not trying to make a case that all is well in the Pitt Hoops world. Our recruiting problems are real. They appear to be significant. And there is not much of a light at the end of a much lengthier tunnel.

** Therefore, if you are willing to take the tonight’s dare, it is required that put your longer term concerns in your pocket for the moment. If you can do that, well then …

** Personally, I know I enjoy the idea of getting my hopes up for a Pitt Hoops season. And I realize that being optimistic isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

** In fact, lately it even seems like it’s becoming the “cooler” notion to take the opposite route for Pitt Hoops. Maybe some folks feel like it’s somehow less risky, if not even less embarrassing, to be fan unless you can be a fan who talks about how bad you think the team will be.

** If that’s where you are, then I dare you to change your mindset. Why not? Really, what do you have to lose?

** Or maybe, you are a fan who is just not truly convinced that the list of Mike Young, et al, just won’t be all that good in the coming campaign.

** If that’s where you are, then there is surely some evidence to back up your thought. Despite the fact that the Panthers were more or less “in” the NCAA tournament when the calendar turned to March 2015, losing the final five in an often disturbing fashion isn’t encouraging.

** But look at the list of Panthers above. This list of Panther Hoopers is importantly different than the list that lost those final five games. The above list of Panthers is better.

** The Panthers were pretty good offensively last year. They were ranked #30 by Kenpom. And they will be better. In fact, they will be formidable.

** They will be better offensively because our guard play will be significantly improved. I’ve been told very good things about Milligan. He can do some things that we couldn’t do last year, such as get by people with dribble penetration. Maybe it was blind luck that we got Jonathan. But he will make a difference.

** Many among the Panther faithful aren’t James Robinson fans. That’s understandable when James doesn’t seem to be able to bring enough offensively to make a difference. But with Milligan, an improved Chris Jones, and a really decent player in Sterling Smith, James will have the quality backcourt partner he hasn’t had since Tray Woodall.

** I regret speaking negatively about Cam Wright, but the reality is that he was miscast last year, and simply did not have the skills needed for his role last year.

** And I haven’t even mentioned Damon Wilson and Cam Johnson. Especially with Cameron, there’s so much that could happen there beyond normal expectations.

** When moving to the front court, it’s very important to note how much offensive quality we brought last year with Jeter, Artis and Young at the 3-4-5 spots. And this trio will only get better. They will get better because experience makes Pitt players like this better.

** The only problem with that trio was that there wasn’t any offensive depth behind them when one or more of the three wasn’t bringing it offensively. From everything I’ve come to understand, Rafael Maia should be a real contributor. We should expect more offensive skills than a Gary McGee and every bit his equal as a rebounder. Defensively? Well. We’ll have to see.

** This leads to the one and only thing that really matters if you want to take the dare, and to believe the Panthers will be a pretty darn good team next year. Defense.

** We all know the truth. The Panthers were a very, very bad defensive team last year. If anyone is going to dare to think we can be a pretty darn good team in 15-16, we have to understand how this can improve significantly.

** Here’s how. Execution and depth. Some of our defensive problems were not about ability, but understanding execution, such as help and rotation. More experience with improve this.

** Depth will improve it as well. It will allow a greater focus and understanding that defense will make this team better. Last year, someone very close to the team confided to me: “I think some of the guys are worried more about scoring than they are about winning.” Depth will help to solve this problem. Especially when there are more guys who can score.

** And let’s go back to our much maligned recruiter and Head Coach, Jamie Dixon. He has proven time and time again, regardless if you always agree with how he does it, that he can most often get the players he does have to do what they need to do. Dixon is far too concerned with defense for it not to improve. How much? Well … we’ll see.

** In Hawaii last year, I was told by the one person closer to Jamie Dixon than anyone else that we were going to have a tough year, but we would be much better next year. I’ll dare to take her at her word.

** So what does “much better” actually mean? I’m convinced we’ll be an NCAA Tournament Team. Do you dare to believe me?

** How much better than that depends so much on defensive progress. We were 202 in defensive efficiency last year. I’m sure that number will be at least split in half next year. That’s good enough to get us to the Big Dance.

** If that number gets closer to 50 or so, then we can start talking Top 25. I’ll even dare to believe this is in the cards.

** From there, it’s all about a run a this team can make in the NCAA Tournament. OK … that’s where my daring to dream a little will have to slow down. I have a tremendous belief in Coach Dixon’s ability to get his team to play at a high level in the regular season. But it’s a little much even for me to take that dare in the NCAA tournament until he provides me with better evidence.

** But let's take one thing at a time. Take the dare! Believe in this team at least until we get to March.

** Anyway, allow me to close with an enthusiastic congratulations to the Football Team and Coach Narduzzi for an incredibly tough and courageous effort this evening. There are indeed times when the winning team doesn’t have the most points on the scoreboard at the end.

** And I encourage all Pit Hoops fans to join me in being enthused about the upcoming season. C’mon. I dare you!

We could be better than last year, but I also think the league is better too. But one or two road victories when you were won't supposed to could be the difference.

** They will be better offensively because our guard play will be significantly improved. I’ve been told very good things about Milligan. He can do some things that we couldn’t do last year, such as get by people with dribble penetration. Maybe it was blind luck that we got Jonathan. But he will make a difference.

This is more important to improving our offense than people realize. We didn't have anyone who could do it effectively last year if Milligan can do this, it might move our offense from good to great.

Oh, and I'll take the dare.

I won't take the dare because I have felt all along that we will be an 11 win team in the ACC and dare I say...a team that can make the sweet 16? We will make the tourney and win our first round game, and then after that it only takes one win to make it to the 2nd weekend of the tourney.

I've been on these boards for about 8 years and these are the best Dribbles I can recall. Very good stuff.

The only thing I will say that gives me pause for concern are all the injuries. Jamie Dixon's players improve. We know that. We expect this team to improve over last season because they will be a year older. We should be healthy by the time it matters, but the damage was already done. There wasnt the typical off season progression due to the lack of bodies. Let's just hope the injury bug cures itself by the time November rolls around. And let's hope that age, maturity and competition make up for the lack of a quality off season.

I don't know if this team can improve offensively, so let's say that it remains the same. If we improve over last year even just a bit defensively, we will be better. And the depth will help prevent the late season slide.

Thanks for the nice thought and the injuries give me pause as well.

This should be a season that tells us what kind of program we have. If it's the Pitt hoops program we're used to, everyone should be a little bit better than last year and I think we make the tourney.
If we start taking steps backwards, I'd be pretty concerned.

I believe we will make the tourney also, but have felt that for some time now. I agree about defense. If we are top 100, we make NCAA's. If we are top 50 or better, we may win a few in the tourney.

I think we'll be better than last year and make the NCAAT.
Of course I will take the dare. I think we will be better because Cam Wright with his funky non shot is gone. I think we will be better because we should be better defensively down the middle. I think we will be better because Mike Young will be playing where he should be playing. I think we will be better with Damon and Cam coming aboard. I think we will be better because guys like Jeter and Jones are a year older and should at least be somewhat better. I think we will be better because the 3 senior transfers will give us better depth. How much better I don't know but I am very confident we will make the tournament in at least the top half of the bracket.

But keep in mind I am naturally an optimist regarding Pitt Sports and as such I am despised by some on this board who revel in negativity.

I don't think we'll improve to top 50, but can't imagine us NOT improving a lot. We just stopped playing solid anything down the stretch.....before that we were solidly IN the NCAAT. We add bigs who HAVE to be a substantial upgrade, and some athletic guards. Gonna be very interesting. Ambush the Zags or Purdue....or both, and we'll be a big deal, again.

Not much of a dare for me, I'm pretty optimistic to begin with.

This is the first time in a while that I feel like the roster is a jigsaw puzzle with all the pieces present. The last few seasons I always felt like there were good pieces, but some were either missing or did not fit correctly. We now have big men who can rebound, Fs that can score inside and out and Gs that can shoot and drive. Robinson can concentrate on doing what he does best, running the show, as opposed to trying to make up for the scoring deficencies of the other Gs. Maybe we finally will be able to appreciate him for what he is, rather than criticize him for not being able to finish spectacular forays to the rim or shoot 3s off the dribble.

At least for this season I don't see any improvised lineups of point forwards, undersized PFs and SGs who can't shoot. Maybe the final picture will be more dull than we wish, but that will be because the individual pieces are not bright enough. There are no missing pieces, however, and the look like they can be fit together to make a complete team.

After looking at the Milligan and Kithcart videos, I had the impression that this team might be fun to watch.

I am optimistic we will see a better team on the floor (particularly defensively). I am still not sure this team is a NCAAT lock - I would love to be wrong and be publicly ridiculed on this board. The OP post is well-stated, just not ready to buy in until I get to see them in live action (as accurate a read as one can get viewing an OOC scheduled game).

The recruiting problems have nothing to do w/ JD or the conference, or the University, or the offense, etc. It has everything to do w/ not having an assistant coach who can close the deal. I hope this AD realizes what is going on and steps in to make the $ commitment to get a closer. And getting a guy from AAU ball in Detroit is not the way to solve the issue. They need to get someone w/ contacts in either Philly, DC or NY/NJ. He only has to bring in players ranked 50-100. How hard can it possibly be?

I feel this dare and post could be aimed at me. Not saying it was, but it definitely could be. So....yeah I will play.

I think we can go 11-7 in the ACC, win a few games in the tourney and get a 5th seed in the ACC without stretching much this year. Assuming we stay clear of the dreaded 5/12 upset, and we win our 4/5 matchup, that could land us in the Sweet 16. And yes, the whole aura around the program would change because I think more and more people aren't taking Sweet 16's for granted anymore.

I don't see anything that gets me that excited about this year's squad, just don't. All I have seen is bunches of players leaving the school and tons of recruiting misses. Yes I realize I am a glass half empty type of guy but there is no way Pitt should be in this position right now.

Sure it's nice to "want to believe" and be "positive" and I wish I had DT's optimism. For me though, I see a very similar season like last year - bad defense and maybe a slightly better spin on offense. Do we make the dance? Who knows but I wouldn't hold my breath. Hope I'm wrong but that's just how I feel.

Maia (led Ivy in rebounding 3 straight years), ANO (defensive shot blocker and rebounder), and Nix (7 footer, was all league in his JUCO region) are already better than Haughton, Randall and Uchebo, and they even haven't played one game yet for us. Sterling Smith is nearly guaranteed to be better on offense than Cam Wright. Wilson should be at least as good as Newkirk. Cam Johnson is apparently healthy. Young and Artis both slide down a position, and we have depth, something we had NONE of last year. Heck, we were regularly using walk-ons in key roles last year and they we doing better than the guys we dumped. We have Ontario Lett to coach up big men. Other than all that, yeah the same as last year.

Agree that Pitt will be better, but that's not saying much. Coach Dixon's player's normally improve with time in the system, but you have to wonder how it will work -- the old issue of "team chemistry" -- with all these transfers.

Seems a bit awkward to me, for example, that we have 3 transfers for the center position.

Biggest problem on AD Barnes' plate right now - after finding ways to increase attendance at football games - is the issue of BB recruiting. I bet Pitt makes a significant move in this regard after this season.

Go Pitt.

Be honest, what chemistry did we lose? What chemistry did Randall, Uchebo and Haughton add to the team?

I think the combination of better guard play offensively and defensively , depth at center and most importantly playing with a little more anger will all add up to a really good year.

What bothered me most about last year was getting bossed around on our home court

Agree that we didn't lose any team chemistry with those players. But that was kind of my point -- they were transfers, and now we have more transfers. Does Coach Dixon's approach work with kids who are only going to be at Pitt for a year or two? Our best players have been the guys who have been here for their whole career and developed over time.

Go Pitt.

I'm very excited about the season. I really think Artis can be one of our best players in recent memory. Maybe better than anyone not named DeJuan Blair or Sam Young. His game really reminds me a lot of Carmelo Anthony. I'd be horribly disappointed if we don't make the tourney this year.

This roster is far more talented than some of the teams in the 2000's. JD will have this team back in the Big Dance. Book It. Time to get on board fellas.

C’mon. I dare you!
Jay Bilas was on with Pomp from the Capitol Grille today....he thinks we are a tourney team for sure but he too wants James R to lead. JD can flip his image or he can cement it. 2015-16 is a watershed year for him. I'll take the dare.....but the players hold the cards.
