The loss of the steel industry definitely hurt Pittsburgh, but let's not take it for granted that it was a total loss. Imagine living in this:

I remember a Bessemer furnace in McKeesport that would light up the night sky. Mom would bitch about all the soot on the window ledges...And we lived across the river on the bluff in West Mifflin...Think there is one in Station Square park.

that's is how half the country still views Pittsburgh, Every time I travel I hear it. Dirtiest to one of the cleanest cities. People who never visited think we are covered in smog, I tell them know just rain clouds
