Believe me, I like them and all. However, I was wondering why Pitt chose to go with the Gottfried/Hackett era colors when we wore more of a "Steeler yellow" than the Dorsett/Marino era when it was more of a mustard gold.

I like both uniforms but when I see the royal blue and yellow I think Ironhead, Alex Van Pelt, etc, not Marino/Dorsett

I think it's fair to say, these aren't really reminiscent to any of our former uniforms.. Closest to the AVP ones I guess, very early 90's I think. That blue is unique though, definitely haven't seen it before in any former pitt uni, none that I can recall.

I see your argument but my personal opinion has always been that the Gottfried/Hackett color combo was the best ever and not even close.

The blur is ever so slightly lighter but gorgeous just the same.

I think the color scheme used for our current throwbacks is perfect. The blue is substantially lighter than before and the yellow has enough mustard in it to not be exceedingly bright (like the pants on AVP in that picture). I'd like to see these full time but otherwise left untouched as the throwback uni.

I disagree entirely. I don't think these are nice colors. I will take them because they're better than Navy blue and beige but there's no doubt that our best colors were the dark blue and mustard.

The Buddy Hackett unis were as ugly as it gets and why they brought them back ???
Because they are Pitt

Anybody with half a clue would have made the throw backs JM I /Tony Dorsett style

But Pitt will be Pitt

Watch the 1996 72-0 OSU game and u won't want the Dorsett colors.

I didn't love the darker mustard in the throwbacks a few years ago either.

I like the current throwback uniform....I don't like when ppl assumed they were national championship replicas

Bright is in because of HD and the fact that people like to wear the same colors at games. That said, i would like to see them toned down just a tiny bit to more the Ironhead colors

The brighter yellow matched the seat colors better. Should have went with that shade the moment Pope Rooney chose the seat colors.

The throwbacks looked AWESOME! I couldn't stop watching. I wish we had them for every game. Best thing Pitt did since hiring HCPN!

The ones used this year instantly scream COOL ! The older muted ones always kind of look like a bag of dirt was accidentally dumped in the washing machine.

you missed the point. these throwbacks are not the same ones from the Hackett era, they are quite different. The blue is not even close. these throwbacks are not throwbacks, they don't represent any pitt football uniform ever worn before.

Yes, this basically sums it up perfectly. Pitt can never make even the easiest of decisions look easy.

The Mike G / Buddy H were the model for these throw backs I remember them well. Sometimes photos do injustice to the actual hue....

Fact is the throwback should have been the 1973 Uni Johnny Majors designed.
He made the gold try to resemble the patina of the WPA Mt Lion aka the panther and while his blue was not quite Navy it sure as hell wasnt Royal.

Actually, the uniforms are ugly when the performance on the field is ugly. Alabama has some of the ugliest unis in sports, but I am sure they are beautiful to their fans.

if the Hackett circa 1990 uniforms were the model of these uniforms, then they failed miserably.. Color blind is an understatement. those blues aren't even on the same spectrum..

This has nothing to do with photos, those blues are nowhere close..

As I am want to do, I always take the positive slant on these topics. Ahem....

So look on the bright side, the yellow in those throwbacks matches the yellow in our empty seats.

Dude the blue looks different on all your photos
I rest my case
And I did say model , if Pitt even screwed that up then who SB surprised

JM I / Tony Dorsett or don't do it all.

I think we are agreeing here. if it was modeled after the 90 Hackett teams, it was an epic fail. the blue isn't even close, AT ALL. but I am not surprised, this is the same athletic dept that had a press release on pitt's official colors, pantone numbers and all, only to bring out new pitt uniforms with a completely different gold than the official school colors..

To your point, the throwbacks in the 04 game were pretty close to the mustard yellow of the dorsett teams...

in all seriousness, did pitt actually ever use the word "Throwbacks" towards these alternative uniforms? Maybe they just wanted alternative uniforms and fans and media labeled these as throwbacks, even if Pitt had never mentioned anything about throwbacks.

Maybe pitt wanted something new, not seen before and went with this smurfy blue.. I think the best way to put this is simple. As far as alternatives, they are a huge hit (Ranked top 5, link below). as far as throwbacks, not so much..

I love these colors and think they are cool and pop. Does anyone know the official color codes for these? @CrazyPaco ?

No matter what color combination Pitt chooses, they will NEVER get all of the fans to like them. NEVER! It's FOOTBALL, not a Victoria Secrets runway!

I like what we have now ... the modern stuff for most games... since it now matches everything else in the University...and the occasional throwback games.... leave it.

The shoulder stripes on the modern are badass...as are the matte blue helmets!!

All they had to do is bring back the Majors 2 unis and use grey facemasks instead of white and you'd have a better replication of a "throwback".Or go with something like they wore against YSU a few years ago. These new ones are a mod version of the 90's unis.
