Nothing wrong with the effort and intensity. Lack of overall height and lack of quality bigs is the main problem.
It reflects no inside-outside game balance. When you have no one who can effectively post up down low it seriously damages the rest of your game. Open outside shots are harder to get. It is harder to drive to the hoop and score when you have no big to feed down low as a safety valve. That means you either miss, get blocked or, you must, if possible, find someone on the outside to shoot a jumper.
There are going to be a lot of games like this in ACC play. Coach Capel's challenge will be to be able to keep the young guys improving and from losing heart.
