David Hale had an interesting tweet about the percentage of redshirts from teams in the ACC last season. Pitt had the third highest last season behind Wake and NC State.

Every season there is a surprise player from this group that emerges and plays well . My guess for this season is K. Pugh and Phil Campbell.

So what do the numbers imply? Do you redshirt many because you have so much upperclass talent you can afford to do so? Or do you redshirt many because your class is relatively weak and needs more development time?

Do you do the opposite (redshirt few) because your upperclassmen aren't very talented? Or, because your recruit class is so overwhelmingly great that many have to play right away?

Each team's reasons for or against redshirting few or many is probably team and year specific. Assuming so, making generic conclusions about the overall meaning of the data as a whole relating to the conference may not be a very useful learning exercise for the fan.

im not sure there is a right answer. I'd love to play a lot of true freshmen IF they are ready and better options than the returning players but id HATE to play our true freshmen because we have too because our upper classmen suck..

Kind of depends on how you look at it. 76% seems high though, I think a nice balance would be around 50% or 2/3rds tops.. In a perfect world, you are a Kentucky basketball and play all your true freshmen because all your upper classmen went pro, but I don't see pitt football getting to that point..

Looking at this from a pure recuiting rankings perspective: the 3 teams (Miami, Clemson, and FSU) with the lowest number of reshirts had 3 of the 4 top spots in the ACC recruiting rankings for 2016. This is just one of the many variables included in determining whether a player is redshirted or not.

This year, Clemson has 2 of the top 3 ranked players committed. I would venture to guess neither is redshirted this year.
