Pitt opens the tournament on Tuesday at 11am vs Georgia Tech and then plays Louisville at 11am on Wednesday. Need to win both to make the semis on Saturday.

I’m assuming Gilbertson will go game 1 as he’s had the most success against GT. Corcoran game 2 as he threw a complete game against Louisville earlier in the season. Not a great finish to the season but there is always hope at tournament time!

Gilberson will pitch game one because he's the only starter who will have four days rest. Corcoran will pitch game two because he's the only other starter who is any good.

Also, it's kind of funny that the guy who has had the most success against Georgia Tech is the guy who just gave up six runs in the first inning against them a couple days ago.

I'm not saying that it isn't true, I'm just saying that it's funny. In a sad sort of way.

The leadoff batter made 2 of the 3 outs. 7 of the other 8 batters got a hit?

Is this the group of 3 format where the lowest team in the group has to win both to advance? I don't like pointless tournament games which our 2nd game would end up being

Basically, yes, Pitt must win the first game. If they lose to GT, that means GT must lose to Louisville, otherwise GT would go 2-0, and so the best case for Pitt then would be beating Louisville, so Pitt and Louisville would both be 1-1, but the tiebreaker in the pool play is the higher seed.

The only team in the group that can win the group without going 2-0 is the top seed. If one team wins both games they advance. If all three teams go 1-1 the top seed advances.

So yes, they have ordered the games in a really stupid manner. If we lose the first game the second game not only does not matter to us, it doesn't matter to Louisville either. There's no way to prevent the possibility that the third game of the set won't matter, but they should not schedule the tournament so that a second game of the set might not matter.

The highest seeded team in each group should play in the first game, both to give them a potential advantage with their pitching staff and to assure that the second group games all matter.

Based on the schedule they came up with, it is possible that two of the three games on Wednesday will be meaningless for both teams.

That just seems really dumb.

Pitt has two games left this year.
This aged like milk left in the trunk.

Somehow Pitt’s RPI went down after winning against #6 today. Although I’m not sure what value I place on the accuracy of something published by a Warren Nolan. Frankly it sounds made up.

The winner of tomorrow's Notre Dame - Florida State game is in.

The winner of Friday's North Carolina - Virginia Tech game is in.

The team that wins that NC - VA Tech game Friday night plays in the first semifinal at 1:00 on Saturday. Because the schedule wasn't dumb enough for the first four days.

I was wrong. After being swept at home by Georgia Tech this past weekend I didn't expect us to turn around and beat them in Charlotte, then score two in the ninth to beat Louisville. Kuddos to the team. we can actually make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1995 if we win the next two.

That’s true, but it’s a shame they don’t already have a ncaa bid sewed up.This team has the talent that an at large bid should have been there for the taking no matter the outcome this weekend.

Unless I missed one, we have played them 13 times since we joined the ACC. Once in the tournament and four three game series. So far we have won all but 13 of those games.
This is unfortunately dead on. We have never beaten NC State since joining the ACC.

If you grew up listening to Bob Prince calling Pirates games like I did, you know all about "hidden vigurish."

"Hidden vigorish" -- Similar to the law of averages, it was the force that dictated that a player who was in a slump was due for a big hit, as in, "Stargell is oh for his last eight, so with hidden vigorish he should get a big hit here."

Let's Go Pitt!
