Chris Carter of the Post Gaztte and myself requested a statement from ACC head of officials Al Riveron on the apparent fourth down stop Pitt made.

Our question:

At 6:06 in the 4th quarter, Virginia lined up for a 4th and 1 play against Pitt with officials on both sidelines watching the play.

The play was snapped and it appeared that the quarterback was stuffed on a sneak attempt for a turnover on downs, but the ACC officials then announced that they were not lined up on the play, and that the play would be re-done.

Why wouldn’t the play either count for its result or be a penalty for a snap infraction if Virginia snapped the ball before the ACC officials had deemed the play to be ready?

Statement from the ACC:

“Prior to completion of the substitution process, the ball was improperly snapped before the officials were in position to officiate. There is no foul, the play clock is set to 25 seconds and the clock starts on the ready-for-play signal. “
