Overall, a very good showing and much better than I expected. Winning titles at 184, 197 and 285.

But, it also showed that we really need to strengthen the lower weights. All the posts about how young we are and how we don’t really need top recruits at those weights because, for example, we have young guys at 133, 141 and 149 are missing a big point: For the most part, guys who lose as freshmen and sophomores also lose as juniors and seniors.

Priest shows some potential at 141. Neither of the NJ brothers showed much when they weren’t injured, and they seem to be injured most of the time. In his sophomore year, Solomon was seeded 6th at 149 and finished sixth. He is a liability. We had two guys (I think) who qualified by finishing 5th. It’s good that they qualified but finishing fifth doesn’t offer much hope for a big improvement next year.

I hope we have some new blood at 125, 133, 149, 157, 165 and 184 next year, either redshirting or coming in as true freshmen, because we lose our 125 and 184 pounders and the returning guys wrestling those other weights now (except maybe Evans) aren’t going to push us any higher in the rankings. Both of the Bouzakis brothers, if the older one does transfer in, should solidify two of those weights.

Kade Brown, who is freshman, looks like he could be very good at 149. There is a good chance he could have beaten out Solomon this year, but the coaches decided to redshirt him.
