Alcohol Sales

WVU's AD was quoted as saying, they made 500k on beer sales last season.
i guess Pitt doesn't need an extra half-mil a year in the athletic fund.
-remember that when they call looking for donations.

Very interesting way to look at it. Pitt is the only team that uses and NFL stadium who doesn't have alcohol sales....

Georgia State (Atlanta Falcons): Sell Beer
UMASS (NE Patriots): Sell Beer
Miami (Miami Dolphins): Sell Beer
Temple (Phila Eagles): Sell Beer
San Diego St (San Diego Chargers): Sell Beer
USF (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): Sell Beer
Pitt (Pittsburgh Steelers): Don’t Sell Beer

They made $500K.....no biggie. We probably knocked down a few $$ in the Clubs, too. And how much can they charge in Motown for an Ol' Milwaukee??

We DO have alcohol sales.

ask the kids on partial scholarships for non-revenue sports if 500k would make a difference.
-or the assistant coaches on those teams....?
it's probably "a biggie" to them.

We DO have alcohol sales.

we have restricted to club level. those listed do not.
-if you'll notice the image, Ohio State isn't listed on there...they do what Pitt does.

so i'll amend my statement to
"Pitt is the only team playing in a NFL stadium that doesn't have alcohol sales for the non-club level"

The thing is, it makes no sense at all to think that selling beer is some big deal that will lead to problems, it just isn't.

And I have no idea what revenues we "net" from the clubs, but $500K isn't a big number, if you count maybe 300,000 fans in attendance in a 6-game season. Pitt's made the choice, the fact it;s a rented NFL stadium is only relevant due to splitting the revs with the Steelers. We could make the same choice on campus, if that happened.

I don't see beer sales helping with attendance or a huge increase in revenue moreso as I see it adding to the gameday experience for existing fans.. Whether that is a priority for pitt is debatable.

Personally I enjoy a glass of suds watching football. I do not like the club seats though……way too stuffy for me

Stuffy? LOL...there is absolutely no difference in atmosphere from the Club and the lower bowl...other than we piss in urinals rather than a trough, have larger concession offerings, have the option of purchasing over priced alcohol, and have the option of going inside to watch the game on television [which for some reason people seem to like to do]. Sounds like you just do not want to pay more money...which is fine. But to say it is "too stuffy" is laughable.

Well if you understand the way that scholarships work for the non-revenue sports then you would know that if Pitt had $100 billion more than they do now those kids would still be getting the exact same amount for their scholarship. Scholarship limits are set by the NCAA, not Pitt. The NCAA tells the schools that they can only have, for instance, 11.7 scholarships for the baseball team. Since you need way more than 11.7 players to field an NCAA division 1 baseball team that means that pretty much every player gets a partial scholarship. So whether Pitt would get an extra $500K or $5 million or $500 million it will make absolutely no difference to the amount of the average baseball player's scholarship. Not even one penny.

Your argument would have to make the assumption that they are giving out all of the scholarships they are allotted. If they are then what you say is true. If they aren't due to lack of funding then an additional $500K is quite important. Another thing to consider is whether or not the Athletic Department is net positive, negative or neutral to the operations of Pitt as a whole. If the AD is being subsidized then the extra revenue is important. If the AD is putting $ into the general fund then it doesn't matter.

But the question as to whether alcohol should be offered to all fans in the stadium is in the context of fan experience. From the perspective of business and whether or not it is a positive NPV to the university if offering alcohol to the fans brings in more revenue to the university than not selling alcohol then you should sell alcohol.

First off, the 500k number is pfa, pulled from ass, so.let's get that out there, next pitt maybe already makes say 150k?? From alcohol sales now, of not more. Third you're talking wvu!! Where I'm guessing alcohol would be consumed more from.my horrific game day experiences there.

Lastly... theconsession company gets mostly all that that the university. The rest is probably operational expenses and the extreme added cost of insurance. Insurance rates im guessing woild ve 25,000 more ler month? I know this first hand. What maybe 10% of the money get put inot anything?? At the end of the day you have little benefit and issues of someone dying.

I went to a Ravens game in bmore and had zero issues with my Steelers jersey. I even went to local bar after the game and had a great time. Been to numerous Steeler games and never seen a fight. Swervin27 maybe you have issues or trying to push your agenda.

"Needs" is a strong word but yes, it helps tremendously.. You ever been to a dry reception? Compare that to one with an open bar reception.. You ever see a sober person do the chicken dance? YMCA dance, Jump up and shout now, jump up and shout now? Of course not.. Dry receptions, you sit there, eat cake, and wonder how long you have to wait to leave so it's not rude anymore..

It's still lame.

I am officially non caring either way. I know people like to drink and watch a game. If they offered it, I would buy one Im sure. If not, I could care less as well. At the end of the game, I usually regret getting a few beers when I go to Bucco games just cause I always think. "If a cop pulls me over, I know I am not drunk, but what if I blow a 0.08 or whatever the limit is". For the record, I never had a DUI :)

I don't have to make an assumption. I know. After the move to the ACC Pitt has fully funded scholarships for the non-revenue sports. If the baseball team ends up giving out less than 11.7 scholarships then it's because someone on scholarship unexpectedly left or the coaches were holding money back for a potential recruit who did not come or some similar situation. It is not because the administrators told the coach that he couldn't have that much money.

And indeed, another thing is whether or not the Athletic Department is being subsidized by the school at large. I made no comment on that, I was merely pointing out that the OP's claims that $500K would make a difference to the non-revenue sports athletes on partial scholarships was simply factually incorrect.
