That the best 2 First Four at-large teams play each other, then the worst 2 do. So, technically, the best First Four Spot is the 2nd to last team in, because then you play the last team in.

The goal of any tournament is to give the best seeds the best chance to advance. Having the best FF team play the 2nd best FF team and the 3rd best play the 4th best is so stupid. I know all those teams are similar so it doesn't matter much but it makes the whole idea of it seem very Mickey Mouse.

I never heard the reasoning behind adding these games, I mean what's the point of adding 4 teams?

I believe it was because there was a conference that got added into the auto-bid at some point, and this was part of the solution- didn't want to take an at-large and give it to a small conference team with a losing record.
(I could be wrong, but i remember that was a topic at one point)

They originally had 65 teams with 2 playing in Dayton, which was really silly. Now they expanded it to 4. There were rumors about it being all the worst seeds, or all the worst at-large bids, so they compromised and picked a pair of each.

It's dumb, but at least they didn't lose their minds and go to 96 like was rumored.

I think because of these 3 things:

1) More conferences, more auto bids.
2) A lot of bitching amongst teams 65-68 who were left out.
3) $$$

To be honest, whether you are team #66 and in or team #70 and out, you really don't have that much to gripe about. It is not like the college BB world would be dealing a great injustice without you into this tournament.
