Anyone who thinks our guys aren't something else is crazy. Xavier Johnson playing like an upperclassman. Our guards and wings played great, hanging in there against STL
players who were like grown men in comparison. Chuka hustled and battled all game despite being outmuscled and out physicaled (is there such a term LOL).
STL with six minutes to go had 20 second chance pts. compared to our three. We
as usual were abused inside. Every team beats us on their offensive boards, but STL destroyed us there. At least Chuka tries, Brown??...I don't know what to say about
him. I don't know how Capel keeps his composure and patience with Brown.
Speaking of Capel. IMO he outcoached the STL coach, especially down the
stretch.with use of timeouts etc. The purposeful foul on French with 4.9 seconds
was great coaching.
Capel is doing an incredible job!. Our players are winners, and we beat a legit
team which with their height, physicality, experience etc. should have had their
way with us. They didn't, even though they were like grown men in comparison (I know, I said that before) LOL.

I find it interesting that you are talking up the battle and rebounding of the guy who got 6 rebounds in 24 minutes while downplaying the guy who got 8 rebounds in 16 minutes.

FWIW, on the post game they talked to O'Toole rather than Capel, but O"Toole had some good things to say about Brown and his defense and rebounding.

He's a work in progress.

He has the frame, but needs to get stronger. Especially his hands.

But you can see potential there. Big men take longer to develop, he will get there.

Nice win. We overcame our structural weakness on the inside.

But, hey, lets not get carried away. SLU is in reality just a middle of the pack A10 team. They are roughly about the same level as Duquesne. Yes, I know some picked them to win the A10, but their performance to date has been middle of the pack A10.

He's certainly not a good center. We just need to find a way to make him (and Chukwuka) serviceable and then we'd have something.
No, he's not yet.

But by his senior year, I think he will be. 2 years plus about 30 pounds of muscle will make a big difference.

Not "some" that picked them to win the A10. They were picked by their fellow coaches in the A10 to win the A10.

Ok, good point. I guess O'toole and I disagree. Brown was in the second half
downright disastrous IMO.
I will admit I'm probably a little over critical of him but his, or better yet his
lack of effort is enough to drive me batty LOL...especially when I see the
other four giving 100%. During the second half from what I could see, Capel
only played Brown sparingly to give Chuka a rest..
Chuka, who I've never been a fan of, is this year hustling, and battling 100%
of the time he's on the floor. He's a natural forward playing out of position on
the inside, but at least showing energy and intensity.

As far as O'tooles opinion goes, consider this....with the game on the line, he
sets French up in the post and has his players get the ball to him. Even the
announcers knew we'd foul him purposely. Net result...AIR BALL on a TF.
You gotta be kidding me! Genius coach should have him flash OUT of the
post and set up inside for an offensive rebound. The other four during the
time out should have been instructed not to pass him the ball, but make
him get an offensive rebound for a put back. French should never have been
allowed to touch the ball in that instance.
This particular game?...Coach O'toole's opinion was the last one I'd
respect LOL. If we were STL fans we'd be calling for his head.

Ah, Ches, Tim O'Toole is Pitt's associate head coach, not the St. Louis coach. You know that, right? Why would the Pitt post game show have had the St. Louis head coach on?

Technically it wasn't just their fellow coaches, the A10 preseason poll is a combination of coaches and "select media members". There were 26 voters and St. Louis got 15 first place votes. Bess and Goodwin were second team all league and French was third.

That's an O.B.E. prediction, IMHO. They have been unimpressive in their 4 games prior to ours and not looking like they should have if they were as good as forecaste.

Brown has more than enough talent to be a solid 5. I had hoped that he could get networked with big Steve and some other NBA players over the summer to learn from them and get stronger. I don't think this happened, based on what I am seeing. He simply has to work harder. Capel appears to be demanding that from him. If he is going to make the leap and become a good player for his junior and senior season, he has got to work his ass off and get much stronger. He needs the strength and extra weight to be confident enough to bang bodies with some of the ACC bigs he will be going against. It is up to him to put in the work, I don't think he has done enough to this point. He doesn't have to look like Zion Williamson or Sag Konate, but, he won't get that confidence if he continues to look like a taller version of Urkel from "Family Matters".

Brown has talent but lacks the motor.

I’m happy to have him on the team- but he has to be a spot pt player, unless he has a personality transplant-

Which isn’t something that develops.
I want him on the team as a sub- but I have doubts he can be a reliable contributor

This is a good point. I think you may be right. What I was suggesting is that if he develops his body, maybe his mental make-up (personality as you put it) may change along with it. If not, surely you will be right. A part-time player is probably the most we can expect from him.

I just don’t think it’s something that’s to change .

If he was being assertive, but getting pushed off a spot or outmuscled- yeah, maybe.

But I’m not seeing that so much.
I’m just not seeing the want to.

Kene lacks talent - but has want to.

I’ll take desire every time.

I’m not trying to be negative about brown -

I’m more seeing him being a situational guy - who, frankly- needs recruited over by a couple bigs with skill and want to.

LOL...Dumb error by me! Well. I think you got the gist of my post. Anyway, my
point still remains though about the brain fart by their coach, whatever the hell
is name is..
Thanks for the correction!

They played like most Travis ford teams play.

Which is undisciplined, because he’s a recruiter not a good coach.

Not really. A10, like the BE is very pedestrian this year. St. Louis could win that conference and they will be a borderline NCAA team come March.
