and we think Narduzzi is snarky with reporters

Obviously Larry Fitzgerald is a unicorn, but I don't see how a young kid that grew up as a fan of Larry (or Randy Moss or other deep threat type guys) would have any interest in playing in Franklin's offense given this answer.

There's history here. Cory Giger is one of the bigger idiots to ever find his way into sports reporting. He's the SMF of sports reporting because he doesn't really know what he's talking about but likes to pretend he does and he comes off as a goof, over and over again. He was the very first guy to try to lob a softball at Franklin when Franklin was hired and it ended up being awkward and dumb and it's been all down hill since then. He had an afternoon radio show in Altoona for a while. It was funny when it started because he was good for something quotably stupid almost daily but eventually it got so bad he couldn't get anyone to call in and tell him how dumb he is. I think someone in State College picked him up but I'm sure it's just as comical.

I don't often side with Franklin but you're probably not winning many games if you're just chucking the ball up for grabs and hoping your WR makes a play.

I have no idea who Cory Giger is, but this question is beyond ludicrous.
"Snarky?" I'm surprised Franklin even remained civil in his response to this
asinine scenario put forth by this sports reporter.

Giger tried to make a name for himself during that faithful fall when we all found out about Sandusky. He answered every phone call and tried to play it into a bigger job. Backfired spectacularly. Trust me when I say this guy is everything you hate about sports media all wrapped up into one nice little package.

The obvious answer to this question is Yes.
We would tell our QB to heave it downfield and let the receivers run under it…… as a Hail Mary on the final play of the game.
This scenario happens multiple times each season and with various teams in many games. So………the answer is YES, WE WOULD.

Kind of amazing that people in Pittsburgh think its a dumb question based on the controlling mindset of two offensive coordinators here?

Almost every deep ball is going to require more from your receiver to make a play than the precision of your QB. Sort of inverse for short passes where the accuracy of a QB is more important. I sort of viewed the question as to why is he afraid to throw the long ball with Allar? I have seen enough behind the line of scrimmage passes from Pittsburgh QBs this year to sink a ship.

Fear of being Fired.

It's still a dumb question even if it's re-phrased into something coherent. Penn State hasn't needed to throw the ball deep even though Allar had a pretty big game against WVU. So now this guy is asking about chucking it deep with UMass coming in for a ritual slaughter to pad the record. There really isn't any context where it makes sense.

The approach to the question was poor, but the thought process was fine. I don't see anything wrong with an OC designing a matchup to attack a defense deep and to expect the QB to make the throw. We need to see the Steelers do this more and Pitt as well. Just throwing the ball up for the sake of it, definitely not. Franklin is still a clown.

Putting aside the poor wording in how the question was asked, I don't think it's that dumb of a question. We won the coastal in 2018 without a downfield passing game ... just because we were winning without the downfield passes doesn't mean we were that good on offense.

If you study football analytics, the top factors that are outcome determinative for winning a football game are (1) turnovers, (2) possessions/posessions gained, and (3) explosive plays. Best way to get explosives is in the passing game.

Read something today that PSU is ranked last in FBS on 20 yard plus plays. Not sure if the context of when the question was asked but if it was expressing a concern about why Allar isn’t i still think it’s a fair enough question.

Also if Narduzzi answered that way he would have been fried.

exactly, Cook wrote a whole article on the boo city, why not an article on Franklin speaking Japanese?

Penn State is averaging almost 11 yards per completion. They're throwing the ball well downfield. They just really haven't played games where they've needed to throw the ball around except for WVU. In that game they averaged over 11 yards per attempt and had a 72 yard TD pass. Threw all over the field on WVU.

There's no denying you need to throw down field to win championships but the question doesn't make any sense in the context of PSU's season, that's all. There's a lot about Giger that doesn't make this sort of question all that surprising. He's lazy and was almost certainly trying to set up a story for when a game doesn't go well.

They're scoring forty points per game. Any OC that does that is a god according to some Pitt fans.

Also, I doubt Duzz gets fired for that after some of the ways he's popped off.

Yea, I didn't think it was a bad question. I am sure there are other coaches who design a play for a WR to "go make a play." Still, I kinda like Franklin's reaction. Laughed out loud when he said "you're making me uncomfortable."

Every time he opens his mouth it's cringeworthy. This was no exception.
