Antigua to Kentucky

Love him or hate him, Calipari is never boring. Gut punch to Illinois though as Antigua was obviously a key force, if not THE force, behind a lot of the guys that drove their success. It will be interesting to see if Andre Curbelo follows him out the door.

If Capel had a brain he woulda bagged his brother and brought Antigua to Pitt

Yes , bring in a guy with a history of NCAA violations to Pitt , get real .
Are you insane? He is good enough for Kentucky. I swear if I hear one more person insinuate Pitt is too holy for an Antigua, Miller, Pitino, heck Pearl or Wade, I'm going to lose my mind. If you think an Antigua or Miller aren't good enough coaches, recruiters, whatever fine, but Pitt is NOT and should NOT act they are holier than thou. The name of the game is to win and make money.

I get your point. But you lost your mind long ago... if you ever had it. :)

You’ve already lost your mind , that’s even before you just compared Pitt to Kentucky.

Pitt doesn’t view winning bb and Fb games as their primary mission and they’re not willing to do whatever it takes , where have you been ?

Why? They have glorified professional (but minor league) football and basketball teams which generate millions.

Because they decided not to get down In the mud and get dirty . It’s their choice just as it’s your choice in following them .
That’s why !

Lets say Pitino is available in a year or 2, or heck, lets say Bruce Pearl and his AD dont get along and is looking for another job, why would Pitt not want to hire a guaranteed winner? What harm could they cause the university?

What don’t you understand ? Their main mission is to educate and to advance research in many fields not to cheat and win bb games .

I personally would like to see some compromises , but what I want doesn’t matter and I’m smart enough to realize this !

The university as a whole's mission is to educate and research. What is the mission of the football and basketball programs? How does their mission differ from Baylor, Auburn, LSU, Iona, etc?

What’s Capel have? What a ridiculous post
A Capel assistant arranged for a financial advisor to pay Tiny Gallon. While I don't necessarily believe Capel knew what was going on there, almost every program is doing that. To eliminate ANY coach because you think they are dirty is the height of stupiditu. College basketball is a cesspool. Winning is all that matters. If we have an opening in the near future, Pitino has to be one of the first phone calls

This has been in the works since December and was the worst kept secret in College hoops. And Antigua wasn’t going to leave Illinois for Pitt for any amount of $ so please stop it SMF. You don’t leave a top 10 program unless it’s for an easier job
You say any amount of money. How about $1.5 million? Not that we would offer that but everyone has a price. If Duquesne offered Mark Few $15 million/year, he'd take it.

Bruce Pearl and Pitino don;t belong in the same sentence as coaches. Pearl is nothing more than a snake oil salesman. Pitino may be a snake period--but he's a legit HOF level coach, an all-time great one.

Is this the same Antigua that people here wanted replaced since his recruiting at Pitt stunk?

?

I guess if you say so....

I’m just commenting on the fact that one poster thinks it’s crazy we hire someone with a shaky past while our head coach (who I like) has one.

I don’t think Few would.

I also don’t think Illinois is a top 10 “program”
Illinois is a Pitt-level program with a great coach. That's it.

There is a price for which Mark Few would take the Duquesne job. Maybe you are right and $15 million is too low.

My comment about Illinois was more about what Underwood was building and that I think (as do most in b-ball circles) that he’s a top 10 coach. His star is still rising. If Self retires anytime soon he will be the choice at Kansas.

I think comparing JC to Antigua or Miller is like comparing a shoplifter to a contract killer .
Both Capel and Miller had cheating assistants. There has been no evidence that either coach knew what their assistants were doing. So there's that.

Illinois has hired Bill Self, Lon Kruger, Bruce Weber, Groce (who didn’t work out but was a hot candidate) and Underwood in the last 25 years. It is a job that attracts a much better candidate than Pitt. It isn’t an elite job but is a much better job than Pitt. The only reason you think Pitt is a similar job is because you’re a Pitt fan. More money, easier recruiting, etc. it’s a much better job. Not one person outside of Pittsburgh would agree with you.

Its a better job and a better program. Just not much better. It is like Virginia......a coach. Pitt was that for 10 years.

How do you not understand that is the point? They attract the best candidates in college hoops. Pitt would not or will not ever attract that type of candidate. It’s not near the same type of program.

Ah yes, the old “I didn’t know what the AAU coach named BOOK that I hired and worked with for 11 years and said on tape I was giving Ayton 10k out of my own pocket” was doing defense.

The programs are very close.

Lon Kruger - made 2 NCAA Tournaments in 6 years at Florida and was on hot seat despite a FF run a few years prior.

Bruce Weber/John Groce - flavor of the month mid-major coaches (got lucky with one)

Underwood - props for that one

Besides Underwood, their other hires were "normal' hires for a program at Pitt's level.

You conveniently left off Bill Self who took Illinois to the Elite 8 and left a final four team and is going to the HOF. Kruger is also going to be in the HOF. Please show me the last time Pitt hired 2 future hall of famers in any sport as their coaches.

We hired a coach from Northern Arizona, an assistant coach, a guy looking for his last paycheck and an assistant coach. Explain to me how plucking Florida’s coach, Tulsa’s coach, southern Illinois’ coach, Ohio’s coach, and Oklahoma state’s coach are the same as the ones I mentioned above.

Man, that guy looking for his last paycheck really made out on that deal. We should all make friends with athletic directors.

I did forget him but thank you. That solidifies my point. He was another flavor of the month mid-major coach from the old WAC. They hit the lottery on mid-major coaches just like we did with Howland

You realize that only an absolutely clinical insane person would’ve responded after I dunked on you with the jobs of the coaches we hired vs theirs right?

im shaq. You’re Chris Dudley
