Any info on Rosie Nix?

Reports indicate that he is still a project, and more than likely will not make much of an impact next year.

typical Jamie project with little upside
First I'd like to know who these sources are . I guess you also regret having Gary McKee and Aaron Gray being project big men? Gee why can't we get a guy whose a lottery pick oh Pitt had one Adams .Now you can complain that he didn't do anything while here and that Jamie didn't develope him. No ones ever happy:)

The only thing I know for certain is they said he was so large it would be hard for him to run, but he has lost a ton of weight and actually looks very fit. The way Pitt has failed miserably to develop players lately, that's at least somewhat encouraging.

I disagree that Nix has little upside.

While playing at 400+ pounds as a senior in high school, he could barely move, averaging only 4ppg, 6rpg, shooting 50.7%. He went to Pensacola Junior College and starts losing weight. He averages 5.5ppg and 3.8rpg as a freshmen, but did shoot 61.6% in his limited playing time (14 mins/gm). He continues losing weight at an incredible rate, and he makes a big improvement in his second season: 11.2ppg, 9.5rpg, 0.8bpg, shooting 54.0%, all in a far-improved 23.6 mins/gm (look at those rebs/min, they're INSANELY high). By the way, those 2 years were spent under assistant coach Ontario Lett, who had some of the best footwork of any Pitt big the last several years.

Nix is huge, naturally strong, has worked his ass off for 2-3 years losing 100 pounds and now looks really good, and he has shown incredible improvement in his on-court performance over the last 3 years. He's now lost more weight at Pitt and is around ACC-level coaching and conditioning. There is no reason he can't be every bit as good as Aaron Gray. The one big concern with Nix is his Hassan Whiteside-level passing (in 2 years at Pensacola: 17 assists and 137 turnovers).

Did you just say there is no reason Nix can't be as good as Aaron Gray.. ? It has already been said by Matt Steinbrink that he is a huge project who may never contribute anything .. Just stop it

Let's give the dude a chance before we just "write him off". I mean we gave two undersized, not very good, grad transfers some decent minutes this year. Nix actually has some decent size....

He's like 6-11, 285lbs.

Let's hope he can contribute (even 5-10 min a game).

Go Pitt

Nix has some offensive skills and decent post moves but not great. He will likely be a good role player but may never start. Good role players are very important. He will be limited by his mobility. He needs to reduce his weight further to play for longer stretches. His legs also seem real stiff to me. Flexibility will help him tremendously.

I believe he will be very valuable when Pitt faces teams with a large center where he can eat up some minutes and bang. As a bonus he will use his good but not great hands to get rebounds and use a nice baby hook to net a few points while he spells the starter.

I agree, let the guy wear a Pitt uniform, step on the floor, touch the ball, and actually play a few minutes before some say he is worthless.

I think this assessment is pretty accurate. Biggest worry is whether the zebras let him box out. His best skill is his ability to wall off one side of the lane. If they call thngs too tightly, he could get in foul trouble quickly.

In the scrimmage I saw, he looked OK, as in, you can put him in the game and he wont suck. Didn't look like he could contribute anything but maybe he improves.

-I have no idea how good he can be. But his body transformation is borderline remarkable. He also has a great attitude and a will to improve. That is the old school Pitt way when Knight took Pitt to another level back in the early 2000's. This is what Nix looks like now, posted 6 days ago. Anyone impressed? I am.

He looks ready to contribute.
Any idea on what he weighs now? 280??

Honestly do not know. But this is what Nix looked like at Pensacola. Anyone trying to throw out a rational opinion on this kid and how good he is at this moment in time is like trying to say they know the winner to the next powerball lottery. A player that sees this type of body transformation again is incredible.

Are we talking about the Aaron Gray who played almost a decade in the NBA and probably still would be if it wasn't for health issues?

I hope Nix is able to contribute, but there is almost 0 chance he will accomplish nearly as much as Aaron Gray.

Those were the good old days when Dixon made projects into players. That's ancient history. For the last 8 years we've had a steady diet of the stiffs like the 5th year transfers that were brought in and added nothing.

Projects are projects until they aren't. By next December, Nix will have completed AT LEAST three full off-seasons of college level training. I'm in the "wait and see" camp.

Reports from who and where? Posts like these from Jamie haters must be taken with a grain of salt.

You could be right. but at this stage of Aaron's career there was 0% chance he would accomplish what he has accomplished.

I thought Matt made a point about him not being much more than a project and rather lacking in any future influence on the team.

I don't remember Matt actually saying that but let's ask Matt, shall we.

HEY MATT, what is your take on the development of Nix?

If Nix can contribute, it will be a feather in Ontario Lett's hat, so I hope that Nix can play some.

I do remember watching Nix in the warm-ups for the Blue-Gold scrimmage. Twice he bounced the ball off the backboard, and in one leap tried to catch the rebound and dunk it. Now that looks like a good exercise for his eye-hand coordination, timing, and jumping ability, so I give him credit for doing this -- but, both times he clanged the ball off the back of the rim and it bounced out to around the foul line...

So, as a minimum, as of about 4 months ago, he had some work to do.

Go Pitt.

Aaron gray was a project coming into pitt too. He was downright awkward his first year. No idea about this kid but let's not act like gray was some 5 star recruit coming into pitt

This is easy .... If I have to bet on a kid who demonstrated the discipline to lose 100 pounds and reshape his body being able to accomplish something or childish haters drinking iron city and sitting on their as behind the anonymity of a computer I think I will bet on the work ethic!

Yep, this year's team would have been upgraded with a senior Toree Morris (bad hands and all).

Read the post on the pay board from Matt. Titled thoughts. Its in black and white. Matt has heard not to encouraging opinions on Nix.
