Any reason we should be excited that Peterman will be back next year??

I don't mean it as a slight.
Hopefully nate improves his senior season like stull did.
Stull had a huge improvement leading into his senior year. I had a post on here, basically saying in depth how Stull didn't have any room to improve, this is as good as it gets, pitt should expect more blah blah and there was a pitt football article in the trib in August, and it had my post in the article.. Basically saying pitt fans are jack-asses and here is an example of how mean they are. LOL, figures, the one time someone listens to me and uses my post, I am dead wrong.

Nate’s arm strength looked bad yesterday. Having a new OC should open up the competition so hopefully our QB play is elevated.

i thought on the first interception, the ball took too long getting to Boyd, allowing the defender to make a play (and a hit before the ball got there...)
You're right about the throw but I thought Boyd could have made a better effort to go get the ball. At the next level that's a key skill for wide outs coming back to beat the defender to the ball.

He looked lost as can be and his man actually made the INT. Boyd had his man beat. The throw was horrible though, if he wails it Boyd has a TD. Boyd also tipped one in our territory that Navy should have had another pick on but their db dropped it.

The problem with that pass, and several others that Peterman threw, is that he waits too long to throw the ball. He waits until the guy is already open to throw the ball, rather than throwing the ball before the guy is open so that it gets there right after he clears the DB. That pass to Boyd should have been throw a full second (or more) earlier, in which case Boyd is wide open and catches the ball for a long gain but not a touchdown. Instead, by waiting too long to throw the ball Peterman allowed the deep safety and the guy covering the tight end to both have time to come over and get involved in the play. Had he thrown it sooner Boyd would have already caught the ball before those guys could get there.

"He waits until the guy is already open to throw the ball, rather than throwing the ball before the guy is open so that it gets there right after he clears the DB"....cept that int in the end zone where he threw to where Boyd was going to be but was not as he fell....

Swervin I forgot what your other handle is? I feel like you have some really good analysis of Peterman in this thread, particularly on this strengths - you nailed it. However in evaluating his weaknesses, I have to disagree somewhat with you.

I define a deep ball as one that is in the air for more than 35 yards. I saw at least a half dozen very nice deep balls from Peterman this year. For example, he had the ones to Boyd and Ford in the Louisville game, and if you remember back to the beginning of the season, his first pass was the 42 yarder to Ford. So I think you are overstating the problem a bit. He can improve a lot on the deep ball, but he is not exactly starting from scratch.

And I have to strongly disagree with you on your philosophy that deep balls can't improve late in a QB's career. That is exactly the thing Bill Stull improved the most going into his senior season. Same thing with Russell Wilson when he went to Wisconsin - could never throw the deep ball at NC, became known for it at UW.

And I think you totally nail it on Peterman holding onto the ball too long. That often comes with confidence, and confidence often comes to 2nd year starting senior QB's.

So I have a brighter outlook on Peterman than many here. I think most of the tools are there, and while he is far from a finished product, or a lock to be All-ACC next year, it would not surprise me at all if he had a huge breakout year.

But at worst, I think Peterman is a bit above average next year, assuming we bring in a solid OC.

He had the better arm than Voytik. What surprises me is how Chad was elite 11 QB with his size and arm strength. I do think he is an excellent football player, and most likely would have given Pitt the same record this year.
Peterman has the better arm, neither will make us forget Tom Savage let alone Dan Marino.
