Apparently he is getting fired and from Youngstown and friends with narduzzi. I have seen his name on twitter today from various people. Mike vuvokan has also mentioned him

Just my personal thoughts on John DeFilippo:

Would think that a big part of what PN would be looking for as an OC/QB coach would be experience both with evaluating and recruiting HS prospects; especially QB prospects. Does DeFilippo have those qualifications?

The LAST thing I want as a Pitt OC is another Matt Cavanaugh. Matt was a great Panther QB. But as an evaluator of QB talent, a recruiter and a college OC, not so much. Seems like many guys who are "NFL" guys have a disdain for recruiting. Can't have that in college, Need a guy that can evaluate and project how good a HS player (QB's in particular for an OC/QB coach) can become in college. Then be able to recruit those guys. If DeFilippo can convince/prove to PN he is very good at that, then OK. If not, then no, as far as I'm concerned.

Not much info, but I think it is wise by Coach Pat to keep his candidates quiet and waiting until the NFL Season and Bowl Season is near an end, versus Franklin Panic Hire right after firing his long time friend and Assistant in Donovan?

There is going to be some very talented OC's in the NFL and Top Programs available by this week?

Coach Narduzzi wants a OC that will stay with him a awhile too and that is how to reward being hired?

if narduzzi is being sincere that a priority is getting a guy that will stick around, this guy doesn't look like a good fit....based of his resume.

Don't really know, just looking at what Coach Pat said earlier, but sure will have a selection of Great Candidates in about 2 more days from NFL & CFB, and who knows may already have a guy coming???

Well, its not exactly correct to call him "an NFL guy." And while his resume show a lot of movement, that is common for a young guy (he is 37).

First, he has a lot of college experience, coaching under Bob Davie, Winningham, and Bob Shoop. Then he took an NFL job under Coughlin, then Lane Kiffen, then Rex Ryan. In 2010, he returned to college for 2 years, and was an OC at San Jose State. Back to the pros before landing the OC job at Cleveland.

So he has a mix of college and pro experience, with a year as an OC at each level; much of the rest as a QB coach. And he's been tutored by some pretty good coaches.

Regarding his short stays, that is typical for a young coach. Its good for your resume to coach under different coaches in different roles. That doesn't mean, if hired, he will necessary leave after a year or two at Pitt. It depends on what his goals are. If he wants to be an NFL coach going forward, this would be a bad hire. If he wants to be a college HC, then he could be convinced to stay as an OC at a P5 school for several years, making himself a candidate for a good P5 HCing job, ala Narduzzi.

I wonder how much of this smoke is coming from his reps knowing he was going to be unemployed

Great Post & Info and Greater Banner! ;)

Please, no NFL guys. Two different games.
s
Agree!
NFL guys are totally out of the recruiting loop, have no college contacts, and aren't going to bring in late "bluechip" recruits.
We need a college OC, with really good recruiting contacts, who will make Pittsburgh more than a Motel 6 Taxslayer bowl 1 night stop.

Please remember this about judging any coach who has coached with the Browns. The last time a coach had a winning record during his tenure with the Cleveland Browns was Marty Schottenheimer. His tenure ended in 1988. That was 27 years ago. Even Bill Belicheck didn't win at Cleveland.

So....if a coach was not impressive at Cleveland, I am thinking Vince Lombardi and Chuck Noll wouldn't be impressive with Cleveland.

Remeber when some of you jackholes ripped the possibility of Noel Mazzone coming here to be OC? Yea how did his career work out? 80% of Pitt fans wouldn't know a good coach if he sat on your face

when did he ever do a good job? the raiders? the browns? san jose st? he's sucked at a lot of stops.

what has he accomplished? give me the good, has he ever been part of something good, it appears bad football follows this guy every two years when he changes jobs.

this clown = matt house

Maybe. But aside from Belichek, is there a coach recently that has been successful after getting canned from there?

As for Mazzone, he screamed Wanny buddy . Matt Cavanaugh part ii
Pitt did better getting Cignetti.
