Apologies to Mark Schmidt

After Stallings was fired, Mark Schmidt's name was prevalent among social media pages as a candidate. I admit I didn't think he would be a sexy enough hire. But man, Mark Schmidt can flat out coach and probably would have been successful here, if he wanted to come.
Yea, he can. He didn’t have enough splash for us, but he is a really good coach and has a very good team.

Coulibaly started almost every game here last year.

Him and Toney both weren’t happy with how they were used here but then went other places and have been used exactly the same way…

It’s getting back at what I posted the other day in response to him benching Femi and Hugley. He’s honestly recruited enough talent over his span of being here, and I think his coaching gets unfairly bashed over the top…. his biggest flaw has been that he’s struggled so much with chemistry and getting everyone on the same page. Which might be the hardest (and most important) part of being a CBB coach in the current portal climate.

In their last three games he's played 15 minutes and scored 4 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.

Not on the average. Combined.

He was playing a heck of a lot more than that last year.

He is what we all thoguht he is. A reserve on a good team (SBU) but starter on a bad team (Pitt). Surprised he's a deep reserve on SBU though. I thought he'd play a good amount but apparently he's basically not even in the rotation.

Regardless of the coaching situation next year, we just can’t afford to lose any key payers to the transfer portal next year. Though I am pretty sure at least one will go. Too common now. And I worry about Hugley.

Rocky, I respect your posts a lot. But how could ANY player on a possible 0-20 ACC team be that important.

Hugley is the only possible top half of the league starter and I don’t think he will end up being there either. We currently just don’t have good players.

Kevin Stallings won the SEC over a great Kentucky team a few years before taking Pitt. Stallings is a good coach, very similar to Schmidt. However, Stallings couldn't bring in a PG or Big before his first season which doomed him and his first full class, which is supposed to be really good for a new coach was subpar leading to 0-18.

Yes, Schmidt is a good coach but so is Stallings. And Capel isnt as bad a coach as it seems. Most of it comes down to recruiting. Stallings didnt recruit. Capel has struck out. Who's to say Schmidt would have been any better.

The weird thing is that although Stallings is that old-school dickhead type of coach, players loved playing for him whereas they dont seem to like Capel even though it seems he's much more player-friendly.

I like Santos. I think Femi could be a good complimentary piece. Hugley can be effective. More so I know any replacements we get would be worse than those 3.

Probably true. Haven’t seen enough of Santos. Femi won’t be here. Hugley is the only one I think they have to keep because of the inability to get ANY bigs here.
I like Santos shooting form. He seems to do decent rebounding. And I like his size. He won’t be al ACC or anything, but he could develop into a nice player. Not a big sample size. But he has a really nice shooting form. As long as Jason doesn’t mess it up.

Stallings was on his way out of Vandy. Not sure I would compare him and Schmidt.

The legit question I would have is “why would Pitt fans think they need a splashy hire”. First, a splashy hire isn’t likely to go to Pitt unless they have home ties (like WVU and Huggs).

More importantly, your most successful coaches (90s and 00s) weren’t splashy hires.

After you went 0-18, I do think we needed a splash. Mark Schmidt would have been universally labeled as Stallings 2.0 and you cant hire someone fans dont want unless you are absolutely convinced that guy is going to win quick and you better be right. Schmidt was no guarantee to win here.

Also, there's 1 coach out there with local ties who would be a big splash if we have an opening but Pitt fans see him as a failure for getting #1 seeds and not making a Final Four

Yea, he can. He didn’t have enough splash for us, but he is a really good coach and has a very good team.
We all learned a lesson. It is best for a program like Pitt to get a good coach, a tactician, who runs a great system, brings in and develops guys and has guys stay for 4 years. It worked here before. We got a little greedy, but looking back those 28-30 win seasons and conference titles aren't bad.

Even Jason couldn't mess that form up.
Or could he.

Even back then we weren’t getting all top recruits. We need the coach you described. We aren’t even going to be a team where a shiny coach will be successful.

You aren’t getting a splashy hire AND you’re not getting a top notch up and comer coach when you fire a coach after 2 years. It’s just not happening. Especially at a place like Pitt, BC, WVU, etc.

Coaches will immediately think that it could happen to them too. They don’t say “well it was Kevin Stallings so I understand Pitt’s reasoning and that won’t happen to me”.

If you think this is a foolish take, then you don’t understand the fraternity that is college coaching.

Yeah. But. I completely and 100% supported, hell was overjoyed with the Capel hire. But with the aid of hindsight, I, and all of us, were wrong. Because of sites like this, we get way too caught up in recruiting rankings and Vader glowing posts. I remember with friggin sheer joy projecting a front court here of Steve Adams, Khem Birch and Dante Taylor. Yeah....how did that work?

We saw the formula that works. But even then, when we were winning 28-30 games, being consistently ranked in the top 10, we had guys on these forums openly pining for the Paul Evans days, where we were landing McDonald's All Americans every year, and winning 18-22 games a year, and never advancing beyond the second round of ANY tourney (Conference and NCAA).

So....yeah the fans may have not liked the hire, hell there was a large section of the fanbase that didn't like the Dixon hire, but what transpired is a helluva, hell it is not even in the same continent, or even planet in comparison to where this program is now.

Yep. We should have learned our lesson. Of course on that note, Sean Miller or John Calipari would be a "splashy hire" and they are from here and played/coached here.

I don’t think there is any certainty either of these coaches would be home runs at Pitt.

We all liked the Capel hire. It was a splash. His recruiting and retention has been poor. That was completely unexpected. If you told us, "OK, we're going to hire Jeff Capel for his X and O brilliance because his recruiting will suck and all his good players will transfer," no one would have signed up because I don't think any of us thought he was ever particularly good at coaching.

I don’t think there is any certainty either of these coaches would be home runs at Pitt.

Calipari would bring top classes to RMU, come on now. He runs an NBA Academy no matter where its at.

Miller very well may not win big here but he's got as good a chance as any in today's landscape of legalized cheating.

Miller could be your Huggs. Cal would be your Saban.

IOW, Cal will never end up at Pitt.

Yea, Cal will never coach here. However, I would always give him a call and ask him to name his price. If he says $20 million/year, then obviously we cant do that. But you never know what people are thinking. Would he like the challenge of bringing a Final Four to his hometown? Probably not but you have to ask.

Huggs was caught up in some shenanigans leading to his firing at Cincy but returned home as the prodigal son. Miller doesn't have his coaching chops but Pitt can do so much worse than Miller. Would like to see him return home.

Pittsburgh has 446 bridges, and Sean Miller has burned every one of them.

Yeah, the "old white guy" route would not have gone over well after Stallings. Typically, programs tend to go in the exact opposite direction after something like that completely blows up in their laps.

Cal reached out.....before but you know Pitt thinking they are above all of this. The 80's really completely damaged the psyche of this administration.

If you didn't know, Cal was point man on Paul Evans staff that regularly brought in McD All Americans. In fact, I don't know what year, if it was 1987 or 88, but we had what was considered the #1 class in college BB that year.

You're right. I watched him
last night vs Marquette. He
played 8 min, had 2 pts. and
2 Rebounds. They had to get
him off the floor, as he was
getting beaten inside.
Previous game vs Clemson he
played 3 min, 0 pts, and
0 rebounds. So far he's a
liability for the Bonnies.

He had 12 pts. on a blowout
win over 0-4 Sienna. Sienna
has lost by 30, and 20+ so
far, all blowouts to the likes
of Yale and Delaware.
Anyone on here wondering,
Coulibaly moved down a level
and is playing same as at Pitt.
I know the argument, he's on
a better team and playing
behind a talented center.
The point is, when he does get
on the floor....no production.
I hope after this year (his
third), he improves. The
Bonnies felt they were
getting a starting ACC center.
Well they did, BUT........

Cal wanted the job after Howland

This is so stupid. Why? Because he left an inept administration as a 20 something? Because his dad said mean (but mostly true) things?

Need actual examples of his burned bridges. The dude actually played an alumni game at The Pete about 10 years ago when he was the Xavier coach. I was there. Yea, that sounds like Pitt and Miller arent on speaking terms

He’s not coming here. Doesn’t matter why. He’s not. It’s not an opinion. Please for the love of god, stop.
