Are Pitt’s recruiting issues part of a national trend?

Much has been made regarding Coach Capel’s luck (or lack thereof) at securing the first member of Pitt’s 2021 recruiting class. However, is this just a Pitt problem or a larger trend across the country? First, a look at how many P5 schools have one or zero recruits for the 2021 class:

• ACC: three with one (Cuse, UVA, VT) one with zero (Pitt)
• XII: three with one (TTU, ISU, TCU); one with zero (oSu)
• B1G: three with one (IU, Iowa, RU); one with zero (PSU)
• PAC: three with one (WSU, OSU, UU)
• SEC: one with one (UF)

In all, 16/65 P5 schools (~25%) have one or less recruits and three, including Pitt, still have zero. However, this may not just be a high-major issue. A few other notable conferences seem to have issues putting together a class.

• Big East: zero
• AAC: three with one (UCF, USF, Cinci); two with zero (UT, WSU)
• A10: four with one (StJ, URI, DC, UMass); three with zero (DUQ, StB, SLU)
• MWC: four with one (UNM, SDSU, UWY, USU); two with zero (FSU, SJSU)

Now, let’s also take a look at how many of the nation’s top recruits are still uncommitted:
• 5 out of 25 5-star recruits (20%) remain uncommitted
• Among the remaining 75 of the top 100 recruits, 7% remain uncommitted

All stats courtesy of 247Sports. Now, there’s a variety of reasons why these schools have one or zero recruits. However, what could be causing such a lack of action up to this point?

One theory I have is that the transfer portal is playing a factor. Using the “snowball effect” analogy, perhaps high school recruits (and even some transfers) are waiting on how the transfer dominoes fall before committing in hopes of finding the best situation? And, assuming the high majors get majority of the “first pickings,” could this be why some of the mid majors are experiencing even bigger recruiting issues?

I don’t typically follow a lot of recruiting, so does anyone now how (un)usual these numbers are for this time of year? It’d be interesting to compare them. Anyone have other suggestions?

We will have a good indication of where we stand at the end of this month. Reid’s decision is important.

Good info. I am not sure how that would compare with prior years. Still, Capel having only 6 players at this point is a gigantic concern. That goes away if Reid commits. His commitment shows other kids that Pitt is on "the right track."

I think the Top 150 is still committing really early. Perhaps the 150-300 kids are waiting longer? Coaches being more careful before offering? Players waiting for that best possible offer? Remember, the trend in recent years is even if you are a 250-300 kid, if you are one of the last unsigned players, you pretty much have your pick of where to go: Duke, UNC, Kansas, doesnt matter because anyone will take a 1 year flyer and then cut you if they have to.

how is 1 or less a category? zero is 5 million times worse than 1.
they cant even remotely be compared.

psu has no brand and just canned their coach but you compare them to a guy in his 4th year with a brand like that is some of parallel?

No doubt that the portal has changed recruiting as it now requires constant evaluations and contact with players if they reach the portal. The days of the blue bloods choosing who they want and let everyone else fend for themselves are gone. I like the portal and feel over time will make more teams competitive.

i agree this levels the field for alot of teams. its a new concept of one and dones.

the unfortunate part is the product will suffer.

i think we are seeing the worst it will eve be this year. kids will soon realize that changing teams doesnt solve much for the majority of players. it will take about 3 seasons for that to play out though.

if a player can improve their situation i am all for it. i dont think that 80% are though this year.
