Much has been made regarding Coach Capel’s luck (or lack thereof) at securing the first member of Pitt’s 2021 recruiting class. However, is this just a Pitt problem or a larger trend across the country? First, a look at how many P5 schools have one or zero recruits for the 2021 class:
• ACC: three with one (Cuse, UVA, VT) one with zero (Pitt)
• XII: three with one (TTU, ISU, TCU); one with zero (oSu)
• B1G: three with one (IU, Iowa, RU); one with zero (PSU)
• PAC: three with one (WSU, OSU, UU)
• SEC: one with one (UF)
In all, 16/65 P5 schools (~25%) have one or less recruits and three, including Pitt, still have zero. However, this may not just be a high-major issue. A few other notable conferences seem to have issues putting together a class.
• Big East: zero
• AAC: three with one (UCF, USF, Cinci); two with zero (UT, WSU)
• A10: four with one (StJ, URI, DC, UMass); three with zero (DUQ, StB, SLU)
• MWC: four with one (UNM, SDSU, UWY, USU); two with zero (FSU, SJSU)
Now, let’s also take a look at how many of the nation’s top recruits are still uncommitted:
• 5 out of 25 5-star recruits (20%) remain uncommitted
• Among the remaining 75 of the top 100 recruits, 7% remain uncommitted
All stats courtesy of 247Sports. Now, there’s a variety of reasons why these schools have one or zero recruits. However, what could be causing such a lack of action up to this point?
One theory I have is that the transfer portal is playing a factor. Using the “snowball effect” analogy, perhaps high school recruits (and even some transfers) are waiting on how the transfer dominoes fall before committing in hopes of finding the best situation? And, assuming the high majors get majority of the “first pickings,” could this be why some of the mid majors are experiencing even bigger recruiting issues?
I don’t typically follow a lot of recruiting, so does anyone now how (un)usual these numbers are for this time of year? It’d be interesting to compare them. Anyone have other suggestions?
