Or are we confident enough in the Fede/Guillermo and Hinson/Jorge combo at the 4 and 5? I guess Jeffress could play some 4 as well since he rebounds well. Penn State just landed Qudus Wahab, who is on his 4th move (Gtown, Md, Gtown, PSU). You dont hear us recruiting a lot of bigs.

i know we are going to get out rebounded most of the time with these two bigs and that's ok, just hate it when the opposing team drops like 25-30 points in the paint.

If we hit 40% of our 3s and shoot 30 of them a game, the rebound margin doesnt matter as much. but it does make a difference if we arent hitting 15-18 three point attempts per game..

Our 4 (Hinson) playing 90% of the time outside the 3 point line doesnt help the cause either. who knows, maybe jeffress or the juco guy can help a bit..

Pitt needs a strong big 6’11” around 260 - 270 lbs, the bigs pitt has barely 200lbs
Even a body, similar to Hugley, who can rebound, eat up space and defend would. Not necessarily a starter but one who can fit a role when needed

We are on the very short list for Papa Kante, 4 star decommit from Michigan who was one of our top targets last summer. 6'10 physical bruiser / elite defender that plays the 4 and 5.

I believe we also reached out to Ven Allen Lubin, although his recruitment has been more quiet than a lot of others.

We could use more but you just described a bunch of things that Zach Austin does well.
He has higher block numbers than Nelly, Burton, Nike, & Elliot combined.
Also should be a better rebounder there.
Not saying that solves the issues you state but it sure helps.

Yep that very much appears to be a big part of why the locked into him.

Guillermo Diaz "not pleased."

Not a developmental big. He was ready to play minutes from Day 1. I consider developmental bigs to be lottery ticket guys that we always had on the roster in the hopes they can contribute by Year 4 or 5. Like Peace Illegomah or Max Amudusun.

No such thing as developmental bigs anymore. Go to St. Francis for a couple years and then transfer.
Transfer where? To the Patriot League? To the MAC? You didn’t want Austin at Pitt (P5) because he came from High Point (low major)

Depends on the program. Developmental bigs have been a staple of UVA basketball under Tony Bennett. The Wahoos just got a commitment from one this weekend.

What were they ranked? When I think of a developmental big, I think sub 250 lottery ticket types.

Austin can play at the P5 level. His low major stats dictate that. How many minutes and how successful he can be is something else. I am not anti-Austin. I just felt that that early, we should have been going after A-list or B-list transfers. Austin could end up being pretty good.

To the other part of your question, St. Francis had a Center who averaged 22 PPG and committed to UMass over PSU, Iowa, and Florida. Future guys like Peace and Max need to go to the NEC first. You cant waste a scholarship on a guy who might have a 10% chance of being good. Speaking of Max, he averaged 1.7 PPG at St. Bonaventure this year. He is still playing at too high of a level. Should be NEC or D2

The roster isn't bad as constructed, and for that reason, I agree that it will be hard to recruit more top end talent.

Fede and Hinson return as starters at the 4/5. We lost a lot of veteran guards. But if I'm a veteran with just one more year to play, I'm worried that I show up and Dior/Lowe/Carrington are better than me so I don't play much.

The St Francis kid went to UMass because he’s a bad league stat stuffer whose athletic traits don’t translate. There’s nothing wrong with that, but not every player fits that mold. Mo Gueye being a big example that comes to mind of a bad league forward whose athletic traits did translate to this level.

With 13 scholarships there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 guys on your roster to be developmental players . The important thing is that these players understand their situation from the beginning .

Is/was Gary McGhee a developmental big in your dictionary?

Not really. He was 150-175 if I remember correctly. However, as a freshman, he looked worse than that and I wasnt sure he was a P6 player. So, by rankings, no. I thought he could come in and get PT. When you are lower than 200, 250, its really just a lottery ticket. Those guys have no discernible skill and coaches are just praying they can develop.

And he would get major minutes on a P6 team. He had 30 against Miami. Is he going to average 21 in the ACC no? But he's a solid 8-10 PPG guy at a P6. Maybe better.

If he was a starter-level player at a high major then he would have committed to a high major.

He did commit to a high major but I think he could have started for some P6's and would have gotten major minutes for nearly all of them.

Part of the problem with recruits ranked so lowly is that you don't know why they are ranked as they are. It might mean that they deserve their place. As often as not, though, it means that the various services haven't seen them play. They evaluations are hardly comprehensive. One of the surest signs of this is when you see a wide discrepancy in a player's rankings. And, this is becoming more noticeable as the various services cut back on their personnel. Thanks to Disney's cuts, ESPN is fast becoming meaningless as a source for evaluations.

ESPN’s rankings aren’t bad in basketball. Their football rankings are so bad that they should just stop doing football rankings altogether.

All told I think Rivals has the worst combined football and basketball rankings of all four services.

Kante would be a major
get. Do you have any
other details about this.
Has he or will he visit?
What is Pitt's connection
with him?

He's already visited in the past. He was one of our top targets last summer and we made his final 5 in the fall period. He went to South Kent, a school where we have had multiple guys go to Pitt and we are connected well with their head coach. Gilbert Brown went to school at south kent and is well connected to Kante.

I don't have any other updates on his recruitment at this time.

Was Gil Brown or Malcolm Gilbert the last time we got a South Kent kid? Not sure I’d call that a pipeline. And Chillious doesn’t care where Gilbert Brown is employed. He cares what’s good for Raphael Chillious

How are things looking at Freedom? Have you officially started?

JJ Moore went there too. Id have to look up to see if these are more.

Any idea where further recruiting for next year is headed?

Any information or rumor appreciated.

Thanx

That sounds right. This wasn’t like a gotcha moment. Just wouldn’t trust any prep school to give Pitt kids unless it’s immediately packaged with whatever person they sent there

The only caveat to that rule would be if we placed a kid there.
