Are we seriously wooing Juwann Winfree as a transfer?

kid was indefinitely suspended at Maryland for violation of the student athlete code of conduct, and has apparently had multiple disciplinary issues in his one and only year at Maryland.

He's talented, but with all due respect, do we really want/need Maryland's trash?

I have mixed feelings about it. As an adult, I know where I may have worked for company "A" and not been well thought of. I leave for company "B" and they view me as a superstar. Sometimes it is all about the fit. However, tell the kid any screw ups and you're gone.

Lets look at Jesus and his actions towards an adulterer as guidance on whether we should recruit this young man. He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone.

Not sure how I feel about it, but I guess as a transfer, it's almost a built-in probation. He would have a year on the sidelines as incentive to groom 'good behavior' before he is permitted to step into live game action.

I don't think we have seen the details of his suspensions, which are a big factor. It could be a host of issues. For instance, suspensions for being a locker room cancer versus missing curfews could certainly sway most opinions on whether he is worth the invite and second chance.

What does his transgressions have to do with football? Haven't we learned yet? It is always about football in this country. Football first, football second, life third.

I hope we land him for many reasons, one of which is how HCPN deals with a player who has been in trouble. I like our chances here w/ Tyler Boyd leaving as a 1st round NFL draftee after this year.

how does pat as a head coach deal with players who have been in trouble?

Dont know the guy, so cant judge.

People can change, you give them a short leash though. I have hired employees that have had a criminal record after vetting them properly.

Pitt is hardly PSU when it comes to this stuff, I trust the staffs jugdement

GOOD POST! Finally a logical thought! Now if EVERYBODY was all hung up on character and doing the right thing, fine. But they're not, so fight fire with fire and play to WIN.

LMAO. Let's look at it another way--what would you be saying about it if it was WVU or PSU courting him as a transfer?

And in Duzzi's first 4 months on the program, how exactly does he handle a player "who has been in trouble"??

To this point he said he shared the blame with TB on his DUI. I want to see how he would deal with Winfree.

I'd be saying "Why can't we act like WVU or PSU and put winning above acting moral" ...time to start WINNING!

I don't judge, I really don't. Did enough dumb crap in my life to ridicule someone else. I want to develop players, care less about the rest.

I feel better about taking the kid on after reading what his high school coach had to say about him. From the Trib:
“He was a great leader for us, a hard worker,” Harris said. “He's a good kid who wants to be great. Our wide receivers here shoot to be the next Juwann Winfree.”
When asked if Winfree had any off-the-field problems in high school, Harris said, “Never.”
“He had some issues at Maryland. Everybody makes mistakes as a young person.”

And its looking like he is likely to come our way. He wants to enroll soon.
Harris said he has had several calls from schools inquiring about Winfree. He declined to name them, adding, “He is really set on Pitt.”

If your goal is to make it into the playoff, you won't get there with choir boys. If Pitt's not striving to make the college playoff, then go join a conference outside the P-5. Taking risks on certain kids is all part of the process.

Nailed it LeftCoast. Let the dude come here. Tell him he has no strikes left. Either works out or it doesn't...but he deserves that opportunity

So you don't think the young man deserves a second chance ? I guess you never made a mistake. You don't know what he did or how he and Edsel get along. A coach is like a boss (at work ) and we all no you don't get along perfectly with all of them. Other coaches are calling about him and yet he called Pitt. So please answer this question, tell me when was the last time you recall a player (recruit or transfer) actively pursuing Pitt . If he wants to come to Pitt and the staff wants him why are you complaining?

Best-case scenario, he failed a couple "tests." Everybody does it, he just got caught. If this is the reason, bring him in and encourage him to lay off of it. If that's what it is (and it probably is), he would certainly deserve another chance.

we desperately need a 2nd playmaker at the wr position.

I really want to beat Penn State next year and given how strong their defense usually is, we'll have to throw the ball to do it. Right now, considering Boyd is leaving, we may have our weakest WR group in recent memory (thanks Paul) next year.

Was Ironhead a choirboy while he was at Pitt? No. Yet when they put his highlights up on the scoreboard everyone goes crazy. As long as this guys not a danger to others give him another shot.

Let’s give the coaching staff some credit for doing their due diligence on Winfree prior to setting up a visit on the 20th. The dead period is over Saturday so I would have liked to get him here sooner but he is visiting.

Well, we're all sitting here in the dark, just speculating about the kid. I completely agree with Nationalchamps comment "Let’s give the coaching staff some credit for doing their due diligence on Winfree prior to setting up a visit on the 20th."
Some people act like the staff doesn't know anything more than we do in these situations, and they're sitting around stewing and thinking about whether they should 'take a chance' on a kid. Every kid has some risk. They've investigated the kid, and will continue to do so, including during his on-campus visit, and then will decide if they want him or not, all things considered. But they won't be sitting in the dark, deciding whether to hold their nose and offer the kid or not. If they offer and he comes, he'll won't be taken with a stern, short leash warning. If they feel they can't treat him like everyone else, they'll just pass on him.

99.9% of the staffs in college football would do their home work. Its part of their job description.

I don't even know who this guy is, but lose the freakin sanctimony already. Good grief. He's going to be playing a little game at a school, not marrying into your family. Who the hell cares if he "violated the student-athlete honor code" at UMd. I probably violated Pitt's over 100 times...and I say probably b/c I never even read it. Could be more than 100.
