When is it time for Capel to look at his assistant coaches who aren't getting it done on the recruiting trail?

They play a big role in recruiting and thus far there hasn't been many positive reviews from recruits about the relationships they have with them.

Thus missing on so many recruits

they were only here 1 year. Give them time, not like he's recruiting for Duke, Oklahoma, Kentucky, North Carolina or Kansas. At Pitt it will take a little longer. But I believe this staff will get it done

I get Capel's theory/thinking in that he wanted coaches who he could trust, as he was burned at Oklahoma. HC experience mattered to him. He wanted his brother on staff. Loyalty is one thing, but it appears to be affecting recruiting somewhat. Hopefully the 2019 class finishes stronger than we all think (trying to stay positive people lol) and the 2020 class is the foundation/building blocks for Pitt's success for years to come.

Where can one find these reviews that you allude to? Is there a database somewhere?

Milan Brown, for example, has an excellent reputation in the prep and AAU ranks so I'm skeptical that he's having difficulty building relationships. Pitt just isn't an attractive product right now, yet we're still recruiting better than we did when we were an attractive product. Care to explain that?

It’s really to soon to make a conclusion on the staffs effectiveness. Plus no one really knows if the failure to land one of their bigs is because of those handling the recruiting or because Pitt wasn’t playing on an even playing field .

Listen, it's a results business. I like his staff but this wasnt a good class. If next year's class is like this year's class, there is no question changes will be made. Basketball recruiting results in most cases are 90% the head coach and ultimately this class is on Capel but he has a boss and fanbase to answer to so someone will have to be a scapegoat.....if they don't move on on their own. Personally, I would be thrilled if Antigua came back after learning how to play the game under Cal.

OA failed as a HC and got caught cheating to boot ...great hire ! Recruiting at Ky or Duke has no correlation to recruiting at Pitt .

1.5 years in, next year's roster will be the most talented at Pitt since mid Jamie Dixon era. That's 1 year off of a historically bad Pitt team.

Is it perfect, of course not. Is it directionally correct, absolutely.
I agree we have a directionally correct recruiting class.

Name one player in the last 10 years, Milan has recruited that has been a mid or high level recruit. You know who else had a great reputation? Bill Barton and Smoke. And they brought in nobody.

You're not going to find any high level recruits at Mount St. Mary's or Holy Cross and that obviously isn't Milan Brown's fault. He significantly improved the recruiting at MSM and I'd say that Jeremy Goode counts as a mid level recruit.

As for Barton and Smoke, only Barton had a good reputation as a recruiter. Smoke absolutely did not. Jaime thought that Smoke's history with The Family would translate into recruiting success, but that really doesn't make a lot of sense when you think about it. Cassius Winston was earmarked to Michigan State since he was a freshman in high school, he was never going to come to Pitt just because Smoke knew his family.

Kofi to Illinois. Enough said. There was no reason for a kid from NY to go out there.

Uhhhhh,

Fans of Illinois, and most every other school,

Could say there is no reason a kid from NY would go to Pitt at the moment.

Aren't you the one that has been blathering for three weeks now that geography means nothing anymore?

Yes, geography means nothing but if Antigua wasnt at Illinois, no chance Kofi goes there.

People tend to have a revisionist history when it comes to Antigua. He always got us in on the top prospects from NYC or that he had an in with. Dixon rarely closed. Kids love him. I’m one of dixon’s Biggest supporters but he was the reason O didn’t land more kids at Pitt. Put him w a closer like Cal or Underwood and it gets done

$$$$ Maybe. Someone got paid.

I’m not trying to be an asshole here, but if you actually believe someone paid for Kofi Cockburn, the 11th ranked center in the class, and Pitt isn’t willing to, why even watch college basketball and root for Pitt? The amount of kids getting paid currently in this climate is gonna be way down especially for someone like Antigua who is already under the Ncaa’s microscope.

I would think pitt, being an urban school, would appeal to basketball recruits more than your middle of nowhere rural campuses.. The demographic of basketball recruits should prefer a more urban campus.

Possible stereotype there so apologies on the broad brush but it's often made with white football players from suburbia not wanting to go to a city school so if we use that assumption, we need to use this one.. You cant use one and not the other, there are two sides to this coin.

Yes
It’s a crap rationalizing -
Kids like coaches and pick programs because of that.
The end

This entire mythology of kids and handlers getting paid is exaggerated nonsense
The payola thing is overplayed as a convenient excuse for Pitt's recruiting struggles on this board for sure, and recruits' post is another example of that. There could be 100 reasons why Illinois might be more appealing to a player than Pitt, but relationships with coaching staff are likely to be the main reason.

But the rampant problem of the dark money influence of shoe companies and boosters, and the players and handlers getting paid, is no myth. It's fact, as recent events have confirmed. I think it's largely confined to the top 30-50, the McDonald's AA types, but it certainly is real. It may be worse right now than it ever was.

If money is being overrated in recruiting remember 1976 doesn’t happen without it . Charles Smith inc doesn’t happen without it . Sadly that’s the facts and the amount of money in the game has increased exponentially .

burt grossman said in Sports Illustrated that he had to take a pay cut when he left pitt to go the nfl.. made some comments about players excessive use of steroids in college too..
