Attendance Figures

We dwell on how many fans show up. The real question should be: Will Pitt show up?
Yes. The more Pitt wins AND the more exciting playmakers they have on the field making plays, the more fans you will show up to fill the seats.

There will still likely be some empty seats against lesser opponents, but it will exceed the already inflated number being announced and the bigger games will attract enough to fill the stadium.

I think the numbers are fairly accurate. One issue that messes people up is that some people think that there are 30K in each of the 2 decks when there are actually twice as many in the lower deck. When the lower deck is full, thats 40K and about a quarter of that is students. Also, people look at the opposing side and just assume that density for the home side above and around them, which they can't see.

The lower level only has 40,000 seats if you include the club seats and the box seats. There are around 31 - 32,000 "non-premium" lower level seats.

One other thing that messes people up when they are estimating the crowd is that if you are in the lower level and you are looking across the stadium at the lower level you think that there are way more people there than there actually are. Because if there is a group of people sitting in a row and then there is an empty row behind them and then the row behind that has people in it, from a lower vantage point you simply cannot see that there is a whole row that is empty.

I had that discussion with someone a few years ago, when they said the lower level seats on the visitors side was almost full for a game, and someone sitting from my vantage point could see that there were many, many rows that were completely empty and that in reality those seats weren't much more than 50% full.

I know a lot of people that move over to the other side that have seats on the visitors due to the sun. The seats are open, so why not. They typically stay in their seats during night games or later in the fall when it's cooler.

That first game, the home side was much more populated since it ws in the shade most of the game. I sit in the club section on the visitor side, so I can go in and out as needed, so I don't move.

Are there a couple dozen, maybe a couple hundred people who buy season tickets on the home side 100% due to not sit in the sun twice per year? Sure. But its not the sole reason 75% of fans sit on the Pitt side and 25% sit on the other side. If Pitt's sideline was switched, more people would be along that sideline.

I remember I bought tickets off a scalper for the game vs 11-0 Miami game because tickets for that game were actually sky high on Stubhub so I sold them. I sat on the Miami sideline and the Pitt sideline looked very full, maybe 90% full of all Pitt fans. On the Miami sideline, it was maybe only 70% full with maybe 30% of the fans being Miami fans. The reason? The tickets on the Miami side were never purchased as season tickets or bought by brokers which makes them available to be purchased by visiting fans. Pitt fans want to sit on the Pitt side.

That's not really true. In years past the lower bowl is mostly sold out with season tickets. When I travel to road games, and don't sit in the Pitt section, I'm usually looking for seats on the visitor sideline. Here's a link to the NH game tickets available. You can assume most unavailable seats were season tickets. Maybe the visitor side is more corporate tickets? I don't know. A majority of those lower level seats goal line to goal line are sold.

They don't sell the donor seats individually unless they are in a position where its going to be a full crowd.

From what I saw on TV, even Lane Stadium had some empty areas on the upper decks. It didn’t look full.

It's futile bitching and moaning about Pitt attendance. Even when Pitt won their last MNC and had 3 years in a row of 11-1 records with All Americans and future All Pro's all over the field, they rarely sold out.

All each of us can do is go to games if you're able and give others your tickets if you can't make it. Pitt simply doesn't have a very good fan base.

The TV experience has taken a hit on on person! I have a 65 HD/Smart TV with reclining leather Laz Z Boys in my man cave and behind the bar a 1/4 keg of the freshest beer. I go to all home games but I would be lying if I didn't say it was nice watching away games on TV!

Nothing wrong with that!
