Attendance

Just find a way to make Heinz 'look better' for the short term. Its demoralizing perception wise most of the time as is. Its the first thing that catches your eye like pitt has thrown in the towel. Maybe hire an illusionist?

Get rid of the yellow seats. That is way more realistic (and way simpler) than all this other stuff.

This is correct. My seats are in the South Club. I was one of the few standing outside to watch the game. The other 1000? or so were packed inside the Club. Deserted outside, packed inside. Surprised how many guys would rather sit inside - I can understand my wife and 2 girls, but all the guys, too?
I would say 35+. Many were in the clubs and underneath to escape the wind and cold, get food, beverages or whatever. They were still there, just not in their seats. Not making excuses for those not there, but just the way it is.

I love Heinz field. Close to downtown restaurants/bars, beautiful view and comfy seat backs. However when we come in town for a game we head straight to campus to take pictures, hit the PITT SHOP.

If there was a way to tailgate on campus and easily get over to North Shore. Turn the negative into a positive unique experience.

I had a weird experience last week, we went to Clemson at Wake Forest game and there was a surprising number of people wearing Pittsburgh stuff, Pirate Jackets, Steelers hats, Pitt jackets, etc. maybe because it was cold and that's the cold weather gear people down here own. Maybe the Wake Forest folks wanted to get in the heads of the Clemson faithful.

College football also wasn't as popular then as it is now. Some numbers for you:

Texas Darrell K Royal Stadium
1970s capacity: 77,000. Current: 100,0000

Beaver Stadium - PSU
1970s capacity: 60,000. Current: 106,000

Bryant Denny stadium - Alabama
1970s capacity: 60,000. Current 101,000

Doak Campbell Stadium- FSU
1970s capacity: 51,000. Current: 79,000.

You just compared Pitt to four massive state institutions. I'm also curious what the enrollments at those schools have done since the 70s as well? Have they increased at the same rate?

Why not compare Pitt attendance to other urban non-state schools in professional sports towns? Boston College, Temple, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati,Tulane, Miami, Northwestern, TCU, SMU, etc.

At least be intellectually honest enough to compare apples to apples.

Most of those on your list of similar schools have football programs we should aspire to being a better program than year in and year out. Do you want to continue to settle for the mediocrity we have had since the mid-1980s?

On the other hand, we don't need a 100,000 seat stadium; but we should have capacity similar to or slightly larger than the current Heinz capacity to accommodate the extra demand for tickets when we are playing as a perennial top 10 team and playing a Penn State or a Clemson or similar opponent that brings large numbers of fans. Think big and don't settle for mediocrity!

No, I don't have a problem wishing for greatness. But let's look at history and see that Pitt in the late 70s early 80s, Miami in the late 80s early 90s and TCU just a few years ago having extraordinary success as small urban schools IS the outlier. Period.

Its not a matter of not thinking big nor settling for mediocrity. Its understanding what you are and what you are capable of. And focusing on your strengths and not doubling down on your weaknesses.

None of us will settle for mediocrity, and I think the present staff aspires to get to an elite level. But the poster intended to say that attendance needs to be compared to those in a similar situation. City schools with am NFL team is what Pitt is similar to. We shouldn't expect to compete with attendance from the rural, large enrollment schools. Noteworthy is that over a period of time, Pitt has competed favorably with those similar schools, and Miami, for instance, won NCs with lower attendance, so it doesn't mean that mediocrity is what we need to accept.

I think what if we want Heinz to look "better" short-term, we need to add more signage in and around the stadium to give Pitt a bigger presence there. Take this picture for example

You can easily put more of the signage around the stadium, such as on the scoreboard and press box. Maybe put flags on poles around the stadium that have the Script on it, like what they do on campus. They also need to actually take down all the Steeler flags and banners in and around the stadium so it feels like it's Pitt's stadium on Saturdays. Maybe even put a Pitt logo across from the ACC logo on the sidelines. Looks would go a long way to make it feel more like home.
