This may have already been posted back when it happened but was recently retweeted by Brett Hiltbrand who was at the initial press conference when Stallings was introduced. I found it fascinating and shows how completely clueless Barnes really was. It starts off by describing how the press conference went and ends with the post press conference confrontation between Barnes and Stallings wife. Really points to how important it is that Heather Lyke knows what she is doing and can handle this hire! Sorry this is long but worth the read if you haven't seen this before.

That press conference was the most contentious, awkward, and adversarial thing I've covered in my 12 years. I've been to murder scenes and house fires that had less tension. That's not a joke. I'm serious.

After it was over, most people left but a few TV media stayed behind to work on soundbites and prepare for their liveshots later that evening. I was with a well-known Pittsburgh TV sports anchor and his photographer in a suite that is on the same level as the floor at the Pete

We were working when we heard a commotion out on the floor of some kind...arguing, raised voices. The people arguing were Kevin Stallings' wife and Pitt athletic director Scott Barnes. Which wasn't really surprising considering what happened an hour or so before

Some of the media really tee'd off on Stallings in that presser and his family had to watch. His daughters were there. The family watched the whole thing. His son plays in the Pirates organization and I think they were expecting a triumphant Pittsburgh celebration and welcome.

What they got was an interrogation. So we hear the commotion and walk outside and Kevin Stallings' wife is giving Scott Barnes the business. She is PISSED. Barnes is bailing water as fast as he can, reassuring her that this was an isolated incident and......the media members asking the most contentious questions (which is funny because any PGH media person knows who lead that charge LOL) had no credibility and blah blah blah. Whatever Barnes was selling though...Mrs. Stallings was not having it. She was not convinced.

They had NO CLUE that media heard this whole thing. The sheer TERROR that fell on Scott Barnes' face when he saw us walk out is something I'll never forget. It was incredibly awkward & he knew he was cooked that second. Done. 9 months later he bounced for Oregon State.

The Stallings' hire was doomed from the word go...with literally EVERYONE involved. Kevin Stallings certainly has his issues but he didn't deserve the inquisition that happened the day he was introduced. It was bad all around and the only person not paying for it is Scott Barnes.

I think it's important to note as well...the anchor and I had no idea what to do. You can't tweet that crap (at that time) because, well, families should be off-limits and we overheard something we weren't supposed to hear. So we just awkwardly stood around and gawked. So strange

I did see and read these tweets. The story is like a fascinating car wreak.

I found this part very interesting...
“.the media members asking the most contentious questions (which is funny because any PGH media person knows who lead that charge LOL)...”

Who is the person who lead the charge?

Does he mean the media member who asked the most questions?

Does he mean the person who first gave up or leaked the the info on the connection between Barnes, search firm and Stallings?

Peace

I read multiple stories on the pay board Stallings wife never moved up here in Pittsburgh. Whether they purchased real estate or not up here is irrelevant.

Pay a couple of bucks to be better informed.

Another reason why the guys family never moved to Pittsburgh. Instead he lived in a hotel

No he built a condo downtown and moved from the hotel. You’re right tho his wife didn’t come from Nashville and they both hated Pittsburgh

Also Barnes was never staying no matter what happened with stallings. His family hated it here and he tried to get the university of Washington a few months after he was hired here. His daughter had health issues and they didn’t want to be here.

So either:

People in the media had this story and hid it
People in the media made this story up now

Given what we generally get from the media, either is possible.

What health issues his daughter have that made him want to leave

This thread is nonsense. I have a hard time believing that Media members witnessed this but never reported it. In an industry where internet clicks, followers on Twitter and simply being the person to report a story, there is no way a media member witnessed this and did not report it especially considering Stallings hire was criticized by just about everyone when it happened.

My guess like about 75% of reported stories is this specific report is a fabricated story. His wife might have hated Pgh, his wife might have never moved here... But her and Barnes going at in the hall in front of media members on the day Kevin was hired most likely did not happen or the Media would have been all over reporting it.

The health issues as the reason to move is something I never understood. UPMC is one of the best systems in the world.

You missed the whole point. They were in one of the private court side boxes finishing up on stories and Barnes did not know they were there. As described by the person that was there, Barnes was in total shock when he saw they had come outside when they heard the commotion. As the poster also stated, they did not know what to do as this seemed off limits since it was between family members and Barnes. Therefore, they did not report it at the time. It was also only 2 different media outlets. The person who wrote this and A prominent local tv media person and his camera man. Don't know who that person was but it's not something a tv media person who is not a writer is going to report on the evening news.

Not saying it didn’t happen, but did any of the other media corroborate his story? The Pittsburgh media, especially Dejan, aren’t the types to not make a big deal of something like that.
As he said in the thread, it was only he and 1 other local tv anchor and his camera man, not a whole lot of reporters. And as he stated, they were as shocked as Barnes and didn't know what to do. And thought the story was off limits since it was between Barnes and a family member. If Dejan were there, he probably would have reported it since he is below even most other sports writers. I can see IF, and not saying it was, but IF it was someone like Bob Pompeani, I don't think he would report something like this.

Exactly. I thought a commented on this before but the thread is now gone. If this really happened why in the world would these media members not report it then??

The health issues as the reason to move is something I never understood. UPMC is one of the best systems in the world.

And the doctor's at UPMC were the first to actually figure out what was wrong with her. I think it tied more to her struggling with her health on the other side of the country from family and friends.

If two wrongs don't make a right, 3 or 5 sure as hell don't either. Barnes came to a small P5 school in a big city and if you are not careful, you will get scalped.
Barnes handled Dixon's departure relatively well, IMO. Dixon was whining, recruiting sucked and his ship was taking on water. He wanted out and out he went.
But if Barnes thought the city media (as piss poor as they are...and piss poor is a good description) was going to Penn State style saluting, he was way off base.
Barnes mailed in the Stallings hire in two major ways. First, he picked the wrong type of guy to pick up the pieces in the ACC....Barnes is a good coach, but the ACC is the premier brand and Pitt was falling fast....Barnes is not a motivator.
Secondly, Stallings is not a slick ACC style coach. His suits don't fit well, he has no real persona and he was entirely unprepared because he was never vetted. Right guy wrong job, or wrong job for the right guy.
Since Barnes put nothing into the search he had no realization of its outcome. The search firm insulates you from legal liability, but it does not attend press conferences or handle an angry fan base.
I admire Barnes' wife.

Actually I thought Stallings was fairly stylish, especially when compared to the slob from ND, or Huggins at WVU.

I still don't think i buy into the whole narrative that Stallings was a good coach in a bad situation. More like he was an average coach whose better days were long gone in a bad situation. He had some good years early on at Vandy, but the recent showing wasn't anything to write home about. Losing play-in games to Wichita State by 20? Maybe if he replaced Howland in 2003, he would have achieved Dixon like success, or probably a little less. But Stallings at this stage of his career was far from a good coach.

Again this doesn't make any sense. They are not from Corvallis and there are no friends or family anywhere near Corvallis.

Why isn’t anyone talking about the other coaches Barnes and Pitt reached out to that said no thanks?

Or are we sticking with the “it was Stallings all along” search firm/Barnes/Stallings conspiracy narrative?

I think maybe this new hiring process might reinforce what many already know-Pitt is not on the short list for many up and coming coaches or for established P6 winners.
