The rapid rise of the ACC means Pitt has to really open up the checkbook. Clemson and FSU are 2 of the elites and will be for at the next decade. The Coastal with the new influx of good coaches is going to change also...Miami and VaTech are well on their way...Pitt can't screw around, they gotta step it up or get stepped on. Not sure they'll have time for baby steps.
In two short years... we've gone from averaging 6 wins a year to averaging 8. The trajectory is up.... and the Coastal is ripe for the taking next year, with new QBs on ALL of the teams except Duke.
Agree. It's gotta stay up. Need a strong OC hire, need to close out this class strong and then kick ass in next year's class....quit pissing around and getting Raines to be this year's Ford would be a good start. Fans (myself included) need to show up for more than just the "big" games. The new AD has their work cut out for them.
PSU's win at home in a rainstorm over #3 was still the best win of the season, right.
Pitt is actually closer than you think. They had a championship caliber offense that is just as good as Clemson's. Their defense is what prevented them from winning 10+ plays. With 4 or 5 guys decisions that would have went the other way (Dravon Henry, Montae Nicholson, Zaire Franklin, Kevin Givens, Davon Hamilton)in the back 7 or if Titus Howard puts the pot away for 4 years, Pitt could have found their way into the final 4...or right at it's doorstep.

16-10 in first two years is better than Wanny (11-12), Bratwurst (13-13). Better than any Pitt coach since Foge's first two year, and he inherited a program that was 33-3 preceding him.
Narduzzi is the best Pitt coach since Sherrill... .and has had more success in his first two years than any coach in 35 years.
PS. Your friend James from State College was 14-12 his first two years at PSU.
The SEC is the gold standard. Always has been, always will be. You don't build a brand name in one year. Especially a year in which there were only 2 good teams in the conference.

A. It has not "always has been". SEC was the best conference from 1990 through about 2012. Prior to the 90s, the SEC was no better than the Big Ten, the "Major Independents", or the PAC 10. After 2012, the other conferences have largely caught up.
B. The SEC only had *ONE* good team in the conference by your standards. In reality, the SEC had one great team, 2 or 3 good teams, 7 mediocre teams, and 4 bad teams. The ACC had one great team, 5 or 6 good teams, 4 or 5 mediocre teams, and 3 bad teams.
C. The ACC was 10-4 against the SEC. 4-1 in bowl games. SEC *WAS* the gold standard. Just like in hoops the old Big East *WAS* the gold standard.
Things change over time. The SEC is just another conference now... right in the mix with the others instead of clearly above.

The SEC has been the best in the modern era of college football. The SEC still carries the banner for college football. And its no accident that the only nationally relevant programs in the ACC are located in SEC territory and claim other SEC schools as their chief rivals. It's going to be a cold day in hell when a ACC program that isn't FSU, Clemson, or Miami wins a national championship.

Within the next 10-15 years... one or more of the following will challenge for a playoff spot.... VT, Louisville, UNC, and/or yes... Pitt. Especially if the playoff moves to 8 teams. And don't discount the possibility of ND becoming a full conference member within a decade.
Ok, so if you eliminate 3 top ACC schools. I guess we can eliminate Alabama, Florida and LSU then from the SEC? What other schools are winning titles from the SEC? I guess Auburn can if they can buy Cam Newton's dad again.
Penn State's 2016 was the fluke of all flukes.... with every bounce after the Pitt game going their way.
If they don't block a kick against OSU in the rain, they finish the year 9-3...3rd in the B1G East... and play in the Outback Bowl...where they likely lose and have a "nice" 9-4 season. But are still "little brother" to OSU and Michigan. And that's not even counting their narrow escape against Minnesota that could've gone the other way too... then they're 8-4... distant 3rd in the B1G East and playing in the Music City Bowl against Tennessee and likely finishing 8-5.
They were two bounces from a "hohum" 8-5 or 9-4 season.
Congrats to them for maximizing their win total.... but it was a statistical anomaly. And the fall back to 9-4/8-5 next year is going to hurt worse than it otherwise would.
I think its possible to win one at Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.
Auburn took FSU to the wire with Nick Marshall. AU also went undefeated and untied in 1993 and 2004.
Don't even go there. You can play the "fluke card" or "narrow escape" card and make Clemson a 5 loss team. NC State, FSU, Louisville, Troy...
Well, if we are playing the "i think" game:
Louisville is definately dirty enough to where I can see them bending the rules enough to win one...plus strong FLA recruiting already.
VaTech, UNC and Pitt are also at the door knocking to compete if you are listing schools like Tennessee and A&M.
You can't recruit well enough at Louisville. Even with the Heisman, they are still just mediocre.
Tennessee and A&M are nowhere near competing for National Titles right now. However, those are two programs where it is possible to recruit well enough to win a title. I don't think thats the case at VaTech or UNC. Sadly, the way we do business at Pitt, I don't think we can either. Until we decide to go renegade like back in the day of the Golden Panthers, there is only so far we can take this thing. I pray for the day that the administration changes the culture and takes the cuffs off.

If you are 18 years old this is truth. There was a time when it looked like USC would never lose another game. State of Florida had the two best teams in CFB for a decade. Meanwhile The SEC was playing dinosaur offense.
SEC is starting to look weak compared to ACC overall.
Bama is the gold standard that's true but the remaining schools are feeding off years old press clippings.
Nothing special at all past bama and those claiming otherwise don't know their arse from the 50 yard line about today's CFB.
Penn State was Iowa of last year. A team in the 20-25 range like Pitt that got every bounce to go their way and took advantage of a very weak schedule. Its just amazing that Pitt can never be that team.
If we had anything even remotely resembling a P5 caliber defense, we would have been that team this year. It is a damn shame that we had to play this season with a defense that would not have been adequate in the MAC conference. At least the majority of our recruits have at least a few P5 offers. It is turning slowly under Narduzzi, but it is definitely headed in the right direction. I think soonly, Pitt will be the team you want and turn in a big year. I think 2018 or 2019 might be the year that Pitt makes some serious noise. It has been about 35 to 40 years now, so stay patient my friends, our time is coming.
A. They went 2-2 against those "Top 10" teams.
B. Wisconsin was a "Top 10" team in name only. There are at least 18-20 teams in the country that would be favored over Wisconsin on a neutral field.
