Big Changes Re: NBA Draft & Eligibility

Those are not the changes needed.

Players should be eligible for the draft as soon as they leave high school. This one year in college charade is ridiculous. Do it like baseball. Enter the draft out of high school or spend a minimum of 3 years in college.

And for the 1000th time, that isn't an NCAA rule.

I didn't say it was. The NBA should rethink their policy. That rule was adopted so teams wouldn't have to spend as much time polishing the younger talents.

and they can do all that, while not speaking to an agent... uh huh... that sounds plausible.

What they SHOULD do.... must have a college degree to directly enter the NBA draft.

Alternatively, must play at least a year in the NBADL.

Those that do not have a college degree and go into the NBADL.... must attend college at a nearby facility re the NBADL team they are playing for... and if they get a year of credits then they may play in the NBA... subject to the team that drafted them into the NBADL

So, there would be a separate draft for those entering the NBADL.

This would get rid of all the one and doners in college basketball. But, they would still get a lot of good players as the salaries in the NBADL would not be comparable to the NBA. This should also put an end to the idea that college players should get paid.

So if a kid isn't smart enough to pass a year of college courses he shouldn't be allowed to be in the NBA, and should be denied the ability to earn a living? Is that what you are saying? I really can't even begin to think of the # of federal employment and/or discrimination laws that would violate.

...and don't use an example that to work as an XYZ at whatever local company you want requires a degree to be hired. There is no legitimate argument that someone would be a better NBA player, on the course, by passing freshman english at a local community college with a D+.

The thinking behind having a high school player spend a year in college before being eligible for the draft is to give teams an opportunity to evaluate a player against better competition, and to minimize the risk that an NBA team selects and overpays for a player.

The NBA had experienced a lot of high school busts that were very costly - that's why they changed the rules. For every Labron James there were a couple of Kwame Browns.

I am older than most and have conservative views about most things including sports issues.

I think a person who goes to college on a basketball scholarship should have to stay 2 years before leaving for the pros. The one and done is a joke and so further diminishes the reason for higher education. It's already a sham at most schools.

I dont understand why you even need to "declare" for the draft. Teams should be able to pick anybody they want. If they pick someone that wants to go back to school, his rights remain with that team.
