Bigelow

It's not much, but here's a better pic....

The last paragraph of this story says it all. I'm sorry, but the city is a joke. I can't imagine there are many other "major" cities that put up such resistance to the continuous improvement and expansion attempts of a major university within its limits that contributes so much to the local economy and healthcare of the region.

Wait it’s been closed down all year to add a bike lane?!?! I still feel like they should have fought harder to close it permanently.

Yeah, the big change is that they took out the parking spaces and put in a bike lane. From the looks of it a competent contractor could have done what they did there in a few weeks, maybe a month tops.

My wife and I laugh at construction back in PA. They build 4- lane overpasses from the ground up with accompanying on/off ramps for the highways here in under a year.

Hear about the new PenDot truck?

It sleeps six.

(yes, I realize PenDot had nothing to do with this project. The point still remains.).

I have a few buddies who are engineers in different districts throughout the states. Let’s just say, nap time rolls downhill through the entire system.

The sinkhole that swallowed the bus on 10th Street in downtown Pittsburgh happened on October 28, 2019. The road was finally fixed and reopened on October 8, 2020.

it was closed all of this time to add a bike lane, take out the drive up to the student Union and take out the parking spaces in front of the cathedraI. They also reduce to single lane each way increasing backup on Forbes. Students still have to cross a street. I wonder how much money was spent on this idea?

Always cite utilities and other underground goodies. Some infrastructure issues date way back when. Not an apologist for any civil engineering concerns. Not in the least.

If it weren’t for Pitt, Pittsburgh would be known as Toledo.

I understand that the heavy traffic in Oakland is going nowhere, and closing Bigelow would just push more cars onto Atwood, Bouquet, and other side streets. Why not just build a pedestrian bridge over Bigelow? No more dodging cars, and traffic actually flows better, as drivers no longer have to stop to allow pedestrians to pass.

They keep making road smaller for traffic flow, so someday they may again propose closing it completely.

Notice they had the road shut down for almost a year and commuters were able to get along without it.

No better traffic study than to have a road closed for a year.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
I hope you’re right! In the event that they shut it down, would they just replace it with green space to connect the Cathedral and the Union?

They should have used Covid to shut it down perminently. You know... students need more space to cross over to the CoL so they can maintain 6ft apart each.

I would propose connecting the Cathedral with the Student Union with green space and putting a foot bridge over Forbes to Schenley Field. This would give our students the feel of a real campus where you can roam around without getting hit by a PAT bus.

And there were no mass casualties caused by ambulances not being able to get South Oakland residents to Presby in time (yes, that was actually an argument against closing it permanently in the 90s).

No reason not to close it...50 years ago.
