Louisville’s football coach is staking claim to a new nickname: “Bonus Bobby.”
Bobby Petrino led the Cardinals to their sixth victory of the season Saturday against Virginia, making Louisville bowl eligible and all but assuring that Petrino will get a nearly $300,000 bonus.
This will be in addition to the $500,000 bonus that was triggered a little more than two weeks ago when Louisville’s athletics compliance determined that the football team’s new single-year NCAA Academic Progress Rate will be at least 935.
The payments are by far the two most lucrative bonuses that have been earned by a public-school football coach so far this season, according to USA TODAY Sports’ analysis of coaches’ contracts and tracking of their bonuses. The next-largest bonus achieved so far is the $200,000 that Penn State coach James Franklin stands to get from a bowl appearance by the Nittany Lions (7-3).
