Boosters? What happened to the Golden Panthers?

I dont have any $ to give expect for tickets and overpriced consessions. When Pitt was rolling 35+ years ago they had booster support. What happened to the Golden Panthers. I read a NYT article about their demise but basically said $$$ went missing frim funds. It seems to me Pitts 35 year run of mediocrity is directly linked to the collapse of booster support
