Pitt and West Virginia have mutually agreed to extend the men’s basketball Backyard Brawl series four more years through the 2027-28 season, as announced Thursday afternoon by both institutions. Pitt and West Virginia have faced off 190 times in one of the best and most heated rivalries in college athletics.
“The Backyard Brawl game is one of the most anticipated matchups on the schedule each year for the two fan bases,” said head coach Jeff Capel. “These kinds of games are what makes college athletics so special. We are excited to extend the series and look forward to four more matchups that will have both fan bases eagerly awaiting the day tickets go on sale.”
The Petersen Events Center will host Backyard Brawl matchups in 2024-25 and 2026-27 with the Panthers making return trips to Morgantown, W.V., in 2025-26 and 2027-28. Game dates will be announced at a later date.
Pitt captured this season’s Backyard Brawl game with an 80-63 decision at WVU Coliseum. Blake Hinson left his mark on the rivalry with a dazzling performance that included 29 points and a school-record nine three-point field goals. Carlton Carrington added 16 points, four rebounds, and nine assists, while Guillermo Diaz Graham had 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.
The Panthers are 89-101 all-time against West Virginia with a 56-36 record in Pittsburgh. Pitt has won seven of the 12 matchups between the two schools at the Petersen Events Center.
