Break out player candidates

Jeff George. Has more poise and composure in the pocket than Kenny and has a cannon. More of a pocket passer, if the new OC decides against using the spread I could see Jeff George getting the job and slinging the ball all over the field

An interesting thought, let Kenny redshirt this year and have George start. If George is capable, then this would help build some more depth in the QB ranks. But this is a big if. We will see how Whipple does.

What year is George? Is he RS Senior. A guy I know who is the only person I've ever met who is a bigger Pitt fan than me claims he was told ( I have no idea who he spoke to) that Pickett was hands down the best qb they had last year so who knows. I'm excited for Spring ball.....I don't really know why Lord knows they never let any relevant information come out during it.

I will go with Pickett. Was at aPitt gathering last week and spoke to someone close to the football team. He stated Pickett is/was much better than he showed last year. He said a big problem was OC who just did not use Pikett’s sthrengths ie. there were no screen passes in the playbook because the OC “did not know screen passes”. He said Pikett should do much better this year with new OC.

I get what you're saying in that Watson likely didn't call plays that utilized Pickett's strengths.. But to use screen passes as an example?

I mean - I think you could teach a chimp to throw screen passes, so hopefully Kenny has strengths as a player other than a 2 yard dump-off pass.. I'm curious to find out what those strengths are, cuz other than being a fairly solid runner, we haven't seen much from him..

He executed an effective screen to Hall in the winning drive in the Duke game. It's the only one I recall seeing called all season, however. Hopefully it returns.

You must not have watched him play at Illinois.

No you’re right, I didn’t watch him at Illinois. But I do have a brother on football team and he told me Kenny has very little patience and poise in the pocket(which everybody on this board has witnessed now for an entire season) Jeff George throws a laser, and if whipple gets away from the spread(where a more athletic Kenny would be better served) and turns it into a more pro style, pocket passer style offense where the QB slings it a lot, he thinks there’s a good chance George gets the job. George throws a better ball than Kenny, and I would argue that pitt has more weapons here than he had at Illinois. To add onto that point, whipple is coming in from UMass, he has no ties or relationship to Kenny. Both qbs are gonna get their shot at the job. Kenny is an all world practice qb, then when it’s gametime he doesn’t have that same confidence. Really anxious to see what happens in spring ball.

I'd be open to the competition, but I don't think George Jr. is going to beat anyone out. His stat line from Illinois: Completed 48% of his passes (132 of 275) for 1,743 yards with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions over two active seasons. Plus he gives you nothing with his legs.

He makes Pickett look like a stud.

We did indeed see that with Pickett. And many fear that it might not be fixable, at least in the two years he has left. We waited 3 years for Tino Sunseri to reform his similar habits to no avail.

Did your brother have an idea why Narduzzi is so enthralled with KP that we never brought him out of the game, even for a series, especially in the last three mostly hopeless performances? Essentially surrendering those last 3 games? And if the answer is that every other QB is much, much worse, and maybe it is ... what is the prevailing feeling through the rest of the team that our options at the most critical position are so futile? Is it angering? Demoralizing? No effect at all?

I only have my couple years of high school ball 30ish years ago to compare to, when we had a pretty decent QB. We were more the ones who let HIM down.

So I really am curious what mindset develops with a team when the key player seems to keep fouling up, and gets a pass, and nobody else gets a fair shot...or a shot at all. Does that tick off other guys who might get yanked for merely one or two missed assignments? Or is it more a gung ho determination to rally around our field general, no matter how enfeebled? It's especially interesting seeing how even the normally steadfast Steelers have gone to pieces reportedly with at least some unhappiness that the QB can seem to do no wrong in the coach and GM eyes...

Wonder if he ever had a game where he passed for a whopping total of 4 yards like Kenny did against Clemson...

George may be able to throw the ball through a brick wall, but he will have a tough time hitting the wall.

He played enough at Illinois to show that he’s not accurate enough to be a starting QB at the P5 level. If he’s pressed into that duty we’re in big trouble.
