Panther-Lair.com has learned that former Michigan State defensive tackle Mark Scarpinato is visiting Pitt today. He has one year of eligibility remaining and would be eligible to play this fall as a fifth-year graduate transfer.
Scarpinato has an interesting story. He retired from football following the 2013 season to attend medical school. During his three seasons at Michigan State, Scarpinato played in 14 games, all in the 2013 season. He also started the Big Ten Championship Game against Ohio State that season when injuries hurt the Spartans' depth.
A native of Milwaukee, Scarpinato was a three-star recruit in the class of 2011.
For whatever Scarpinato is capable of - and with a year off, it remains to be seen what he can do - but Pitt definitely needs help on the defensive line, and even if he just provides some depth, that's not a bad investment for one year.
