Breaking: Zoo After Hours ft. Wiz Khalifa

uh..yeah, he most certainly is one of the biggest rappers on the planet. unless you are being cute and meaning he isn't fat.

He is not one of the biggest rappers on the planet; he is nowhere near the level of someone like Kanye West or Jay-Z. Moreover, if he really were one of the biggest rappers on the planet, how come his mere presence didn't fill the building?

Interesting note in the PG today. Wiz's song "See You Again" has now been view more than one billion times on YouTube. And yeah, that's a "b" and not an "m". It became just the 10th song ever viewed that often, and is the most viewed rap song ever. It is also the second fastest song ever to get to one billion views.

He isn't on the level of Kanye or Jay-Z, but if you are making a list of the biggest rappers on the planet and Wiz isn't on it it must be a very short list.

Or wrong. It could just be wrong.

Hey burnie...go find something else to do besides writing on this board! Thanks

- The idea definitely did not come from this board;
- Wiz Khalifa is not one of the 'biggest rappers on the planet';
- Pitt should not 'contract with famous fans;
- Wiz Khalifa : Ashley Judd, LOL; and
- Wiz Khalifa is not 'one of the biggest recruiting advantages we have'.
Ummmm, yes, he is.

Mostly timing. He wasn't announced until a couple of days before. And actually, the timing seemed perfect to me. He was announced just far enough before to draw a nice crowd. But if he had been announced several weeks before, this event would have been "just a Wiz Kalifa concert" instead of a Pitt Hoops event.

And again -- this was "billed" as a Wiz Kalifa appearance more than it was a "concert." But that in conjunction with the short notice, and the folks who knew about it were really just Pitt fans. Add to that, the timing of the 11:00 event, and this kept much of the high school audience away.

But make no mistake -- Wiz is very big deal. And the whole thing was handled very deftly in my opinion.

Of course he isn't as big as Kanye West or Jay Z. Kanye is the most influential rapper and producer of the last 15 years. I argue that he's the most important musician of the 21st century. Of course Wiz can't match that. That's like saying "Yeah, no way is Klay Thompson any good! He's no Michael Jordan." Yeah, he's not Michael Jordan, but he's still really good.

But at the same time, your dismissal of a guy who's most recent album hit #1 on Billboard 200, seems too casual and ill-informed.

If they had more than a day to get the word out, the place would have been full.

My guess is without Wiz, it would have substantial less...with the lack of buzz going into the season, maybe 1000 or less. Students at the game said they got in line at 8:30 and that many in their line were there just to see Wiz.

From what I heard (and this is hearsay so I don't know if it is true), Wiz performed for free.

Talked to someone close to the team...expect the defense to be much better this year. A return to more of what we've come to expect. And we'll have a capable center.

Maybe Wiz performed for free, but I'd guess they had to put out a few dollars to bring in Jay Williams.

Otherwise, I agree with your thoughts about attendance and Wiz. And even if the did pay for it, good for them. Whatever it takes to get more students to begin to connect with Hoops is good.

It's not often that I walk out of athletic department events thinking "that was well done!" But that's what I thought of the event on Friday.

Can anyone give a brief description of the event? Thanks

Absolutely had to pay Jay, but no one was making the decision to go to this event to see Jay Williams.

Lets put it this way...Wiz Khalifa doesn't need to do small scale side gigs like this. Even if Pitt paid him, I'm guessing it was because Wiz wanted to do it more than he was looking to make some extra scratch. If he did this gratis, kudos to Khalifa, and hopefully we'll get him involved with more Pitt events...maybe get him to show up for some recruiting events. I remember the story of Danny Fortson's recruitment with Calapari (at UMass) picking him up in a limo with Maria Carey inside (obviously didn't work, but still).

Wiz has quietly been doing some local philanthropic work lately including a visit back to Allderdice. I know he was on tour for a while so it could be he is here taking some time off and the timing of the event on Friday was serendipitous.

The event started at 11 PM. J Williams of ESPN was the MC. He introduced the women's team first, each player came from behind the stage onto the stage doing a little dance move while they were applauded. Then the men's team was introduced. Same thing with them. Then there was a brief skills competition. The four teams were captained by Brandin Knight, Tray Woodall, Brianna Kiesel, & Shayla Scott. Each team consisted of A combination of current men's and women's players, and the captains. Each team was timed on completing a layup, free throw, 3 – pointer, and half-court shot. All of that lasted about 10 minutes. Then Wiz came on and performed for 15–20 minutes. It was good that they saved him for last, because that's what most of the kids were there to see. I hate rap, grew up on hair metal, but I really enjoy the whole night. I'm sure that the football and basketball recruits had a great time.

Wiz got paid, but he definitely wanted to do the event. I'm glad he did because the students loved it and it was the first "cool" thing we've done in a looooong time.

So I guess Wiz is appropriately named??
