Capel Era is Worse than Stallings

Serious question. IF they fire him before the season ends many players are likely to leave and enter the portal. What's more embarrassing? Losing most or all of the rest of the games or not having enough players to finish out the season? Has it ever happened that a program had to forfeit games because they didn't even have enough players to field a team? That could happen.

That’s why we can’t fire him until March. About the only good reason at this point.

Stallings was 8-24. There is a 0% chance this current team wins more than 8 games.
We will be lucky to win 8 — we have one win left of the schedule 12/21 against Jacksonville. Outside of that any other win will have to be an upset. Can’t see is pulling out 3 wins in conference.

They need a head start on the recruiting search and he should/will be fired some time in February. No use delaying the inevitable. Its highly unlikely players will quit the team if he's fired as there is no benefit to them for waiting a few weeks to go into the portal.

It serves no purpose to fire him before the end of the season. Keeping him on through the end of the year doesn't prevent them from starting their search.

I agree with the consensus. You have to keep him the whole season, or at least deep into the season.

It serves no purpose to keep him. They need a month head start. For all you guys who want the flavor of the month mid-major lottery ticket, it will be hugely advantageous to be offering these guys a day after their season ends while other programs don't yet have openings.

I'm not sure which team is/was better. I imagine they would duke it out in a 46-42 slugfest. But when you consider this is year four instead of year two, the fact that we can't even get a single recruit, and the lack of team chemistry on and off the court... Well, it's not even close. Stallings was a bad chest cold, and Capel is the Bubonic Plague when it comes to killing off Pitt basketball.

I have no idea where you even go from here. I just hope this buyout doesn't cut into the football budget. Winning that Duke game last year has officially surpassed the '09 Scotty Reynolds affair as the worst outcome to a basketball game in Pitt history.

Not sure you can count on players not quitting. There are those on this board who have already accused the coaches of quitting coaching this team. If that's the case and you are a player, why would you want to stick it out. Some of these players are probably already thinking about where they will go and have family etc helping them along. Some of these players will have to drop down a level. They will go if and when they have someone either pushing them or contacting them from other schools.

Who really cares though? I mean is it really worth giving up a several week head start just so we can lose games by a more competitive score?

How does it not?
It just doesn't. What are you going to accomplish with that extra month that you couldn't accomplish allowing the coach to finish out the season?

If there is a change, I'm sure it will be announced around the time of the ACC tournament.

It's not like you are somehow moving to the front of the line in hiring a new coach if you announce your vacancy a month early. No coach in demand is just going to jump at the first vacancy. They are going to want to see other options and get competing offers.

I think it depends how bad the season gets. I could be wrong but if they are getting destroyed 5-10 games into ACC play with no end in sight than he would get canned. But if they are playing tough and games are close he will coach the whole season and possibly beyond. It just depends. They are a young and inexperienced team so they do tend to play up and down to their competition. Which can be maddening when you almost beat Virginia and then lose to UMBC.

When Virginia shoots like they did against PItt and JMU, there really isn't much difference between UVA & UMBC.

Ironic that we're comparing UVA & UMBC.

I guess, I'm just saying we tend to play to our competition regardless of who ultimately is a good team and who isn't.

No one’s quitting their day job to take over at such a bb power house like Pitt .

Other than B Knight this is no one’s dream job .

To get anyone who’d make an immediate impact Pitt would have to mortgage the Cathedral .

Unless it becomes unbearable JC finishes the season .

If anyone reads my bird droppings, they know i am loathe to change coaches without giving them a plenty of rope to prove themselves. I absolutely hated the Wanny firing and might have been the only person willing to accept giving Stallings a longer look. But, by the end of the season I knew it was over and time to move on. Sad to say I am totally on board with parting ways with Capel. I can't see how he can dig himself out of this huge hole; one that seems to get larger every week.

BTW, Dixon was not fired which is somewhat implied in the tweet. And until someone proves otherwise, he wasn't pushed out.

I think if you paid a lot of these mid-major coaches 6x their current salary, they’d absolutely leave whenever you need them to.

That said, I don’t really see the point in it. You can always reach out to and communicate with agents while Capel still coaches out the rest of the season.

No coach worth having is quitting on his team midstream to take another job .

Utterly embarrassing first half.
I don't know if it's worse than Stallings at this time, but it will be. The ACC season will be torment for the fans and the team. Capel? Not so much. He's hanging around to get his checks. The real culprit in this is Heather Lyke who is so wrapped up in women's sports she has let the basketball program slide.

This is the most overall athletic success we’ve ever had. Pitt football has 11 wins, men’s soccer is in great shape, our baseball team had a very successful season, etc. The women’s volleyball team is in the Final 4.

It’s possible for Capel to be a good hire that didn’t work out. Just because a hire isn’t successful doesn’t automatically make it a bad decision. The process can be solid even if the result ends up being poor.

Not really going to get into the pseudo-sexist stuff. Lyke has given every sport at Pitt the resources to succeed. Some coaches - mens and womens - have translated those resources into success. Others haven’t.

Did Capel really result from any process or was he a happy/unhappy accident?

Hell, they hired Stallings after an extensive search by a highly reputable search firm didn’t they !

Theres no executive anywhere that always hires the right person , jumping the gun an extending him was Heathers first mistake Not admitting it was a mistake would be her second and keeping him would be her third .

A lot of you out there are taking this way to personal , no one wanted him to succeed here at Pitt more than he did . A possibility of the Duke job was out there and no one wants to fail .

He’s from a coaching family , he might know the hand writing is on the wall , but I don’t believe for a second he’s mailing it in . He just doesn’t have the players or the answers .

The ironic thing is that what excited me the most was the thought that he could recruit sub Duke level talent to Pitt which would be better than anything Pitt has ever had minus the 80’s .
Just hasn’t worked out that way .

Whomever they hired needs to solve the mystery as to why Pitt never wins recruiting battles .

Wow! Heard it all now. You're actually blaming the AD for having successful non revenue sports teams? What do you expect her to do? Go out and recruit mens bball players for the coach? Start drawing up plays during TOs? Pressure the judge to move the hearing for Horton up?

Cool your jets. If she is going to fire him, she is already making her list and checking it twice and probably in touch with coaches agents etc.

Do we have a list of posters who were upset with Lyke when Capel was hired? I bet it's a pretty short list.

Let's see what she does in March/April.
