That's a great mid-major stepping stone job. He could go there and win and get 1 more chance at the P6 level. He is going to be fired here in March 2022 or 23. And if so, he'll never coach at the P6 level again. This way, he could get out before the disaster of the upcoming season and his resume here could be painted as a guy who improved the conference winning percentage in each of his 3 seasons. Heather could work out a deal to pay him the next 2 or so years of salary since he wont be making much at UNCG.

I loved the Capel hire but its not working and getting worse by the day. Instead of going through a Stallingsish season next year, I think both parties should be looking for a way out.

There's a Hall of Famer at Iona who would walk here, take the job for free, and sell the place out.

Why do you torture yourself and the rest of us too???

Still sticking with that theory? Ain’t gonna happen. He’d be beyond foolish. He’ll get paid here one way or another and he’ll be able to get a job like that if/when the time comes.

And ps - neither is Pitino. Or Miller. Take something for your fever dreams.

what's sad is this program could be turned around with 1 or 2 players.

The way out for Capel to accept buyout money from Pitt. He would be stupid to walk away from that.

I agree with this. But he would be leaving 6-8 million dollars on the table in hopes to getting it back

He’s NOT LEAVING willingly and Pitts not eating any big buyout , get it through your thick skulls .

The guys not a quitter either .

Without a change in priorities at the top no ones coming in here with a truckload of players . How do you think Smith , Lane ,Gore , Shorter etc choose Pitt ?

Pitino has us in the NCAAT in Year 2 but our administration thinks its holier than a Catholic school

Not saying it couldn’t be done, however there is absolutely no way to know that for sure, I don’t care who the coach is with our current roster.

You think Pitino could have done a LOT more with last years team?

There were so many issues that happened last year who knows. Maybe it would or wouldn’t have made a difference. All it takes is one cancer inside the locker room to destroy a team, that doesn’t matter who the head coach is. That being said, you hope they can at least play together, they don’t have to be friends outside the locker room.

I'm not going to suggest Capel is nearly dumb enough to "leave money on the table," but he's been coaching a long time. He's already a millionaire. He will still be a millionaire whether he coaches here at Pitt one more year or 20 more years. One or two hypothetical awful seasons, and flaming out at his second consecutive HC job, basically ends his career as a HC. I think his decision to stay at Pitt is far less about money than it is legacy or lasting impact.

I get the sense that Capel actually likes being a coach, and he's from a line of coaches. I can easily imagine him dropping down to a lower level to still be involved and impacting kids' lives. Does he want to retire at 50? Is he okay to be a lifelong assistant? Would he want to go back to Duke and coach under someone other than Coach K forever? He's in a wildly different situation than Stallings who had been a HC for 25 years. There was plenty of talk when Capel was hired about whether he might take over for Coach K eventually. There's nothing to guarantee that Capel really wants to spend long period of time in Pittsburgh regardless. He and his wife are both from NC.

I was actually 100% on board with SMF's post until he had to make the leap to hiring Pitino...

I am surprised you agree with me on this (besides Pitino). Capel has basically created a Stallings-ish situation for himself. The team next year could be really really bad. Heck, an injury or 2 and they could go 0-20. What if the whole team transfers again? He's created an impossible situation for himself. It might be best to get out now before it gets really bad. UNCG is about as good of mid-major job as there is.

Also, why is Pitino this impossibility? He is years removed from that stuff. He is guaranteed to put a winning team on the floor and there's no other coach we can hire that can do that.

I have been saying for a long time that I think it will be an Ed DeChellis situation where he leaves for a lower-tier job before he gets fired. Even if we used Stallings at Vanderbilt as an example, it is a lot easier to market yourself for a position when you are voluntarily leaving current employment than if you're on record as having been fired. It's not like Capel had some big success recently and then fell apart. He's a decade removed from one good season at OU.

I personally just think there are too many basketball jobs in NC where he could easily coast for the rest of his career. I had suggested before that he could even go and coach at a HBCU and he'd probably be a recruiting rockstar. I'm sure money is as important to him as anyone else, but I think he's motivated by a lot of other factors also. He doesn't have to drain years off his lifespan by being mired in failure here at Pitt.

Having said all of that, I think there's almost zero chance any of that happens this offseason, and I personally still think there's a decent chance that he can turn it around. I do think his fate (at Pitt) will be sealed based on this next fall recruiting class. Capel has a boatload of scholarships and the transfer portal is as full as it can be. If he fails to bring in talent, there will be absolutely no valid excuse.

Maybe you should take your act to another message board and leave us alone?

Capel COULD get an HBCU job whenever he wants it no matter what but is that what he'd really want to do....for 150K/year? I dont know, maybe. But I'm saying if he ever wants to get back into the P6, he needs a solid mid-major job, like UNCG. If he has 2 more really bad seasons here and then gets canned, he wont be able to get a mid-major job and would have to settle for the MEAC or an assistant role.

But I'm saying if he ever wants to get back into the P6
Why would he? He's proven to be average at best. Does he want to be coaching for his job every few years any time they hit a rough patch?

He'd have a way better shot being the big fish in a small pond and position himself as the guy who landed all that NBA talent at Duke but now coaching the little guy. You, of all people, should recognize that it exactly what Pitino is doing already.

He would be a fool to ever leave a big lump sum of money on the table. That opportunity may not ever be there again. For better or worse, ride it out at Pitt and get paid.

OK but that job will always be there. Granted, he won't be able to get a "good" mid-major job if he flames out here but he can go coach NC Central or NC A&T and be the man. Then he could parlay that into a good mid-major job in the SoCon.
