This is old news but I figured I'd bring it up again considering how anti-climactic these Jan 2 bowl games felt (feels like watching the NIT after the Final Four).

Since ratings were bad for the weekday semifinals last year and why wouldn't they be, NYE is a workday for a lot of people, the CFP has decided to move the semifinals from NYE when the date doesn't fall on a Saturday.

Next year, they return to NYD with the Rose and Sugar. But the 2 years after that, they are on Saturdays, December 29 then the 28th.

Remarkably, the year the semis are on the 28th. The Championship game is pushed back a week. Instead of playing the game on Monday, Jan 6 on 9 days rest, its on Monday, Jan 13, 16 days from the semis.

To me, the solution to this is pretty simple:

All playoff games are played on NYD (or Jan 2 when NYD is a Sunday).

Should be:
Year 1 (next year)
Sat, Dec 30
12:30 Peach
4:00 Fiesta
7:30 Orange

Mon, Jan 1
12:30 Cotton
4:30 Rose (CFP)
8:30 Sugar (CFP)

2018-19
Mon, Dec 31
12:30 Peach
4:00 Fiesta
7:30 Sugar

Tue, Jan 1
12:30 Cotton (CFP)
4:30 Rose
8:30 Orange (CFP)

2019-20
Tue, Dec 31
12:30 Cotton
4:00 Orange
7:30 Sugar

Wed, Jan 1
12:30 Peach (CFP)
4:30 Rose
8:30 Fiesta (CFP)

Basically, you tell the Sugar Bowl, it has to move to the 31st so there game isnt so anti-climactic and so that CFP games dont have to be played on Dec 28 and 29. I can see protecting the Rose Bowl date and time but not sure why the Sugar Bowl needs protected. It has been played on Dec 31, Jan 2, 3, 4, etc over the years.

Very nice summary and plan.

In the past and this year the semi-final games on NYE had a lot to do with Rose Bowl demanding to play in NYD due in part to the Rose Bowl Parade (a very big deal in SoCal).

Your plan addresses the issue with the Rose Bowl. I also agree that the Sugar Bowl game float dates as it has done in the past.

Peace

Don't you mean Tuesday, January 1st for 2018-19?

College football is really stupid when you think about it. They have a captive NYD audience, but the Rose bowl with it's inflated sense of self worth won't give in for the greater good of the game. They have a chance to forever cement NYD with college football by always having the playoffs on that day but are blowing it by some idiots running around in red blazers.

Simple solution- leave them out of the playoffs to enjoy the 3rd place PAC team beating the B1G champ.

Playing on NYE is idiotic on all levels. Nearly everyone has plans- especially the younger generations.

Agree play the CFP games when you want and if the Rose doesn't like it then they can have their game on the 1st as well, good luck getting any ratings for the 2nd place pac12 vs second place b10 vs the cfp games. Its not just the younger generation. I am 40 and have had plans and missed most of the games the last 2 season's. I am not going to go out of my way to watch the games unless my team is in it. But I would have liked to watch both those games. I suspect judging by ratings this is true for most people.

They had that day "cemented" for 100 years and voluntarily gave it away.

Same with the Rose Bowl, people who's teams are in it, or even PAC or B1G fans will watch that over CFP games with teams they don't care about. If Pitt was playing Northwestern during the CFP Saturday, I wouldn't have watched a second of the CFP.

The Sugar Bowl's contract with ESPN locks it into the late Jan. 1 spot, it's not getting moved to another day or time until that contract is over. Remember the Big 12 and SEC own the bowl and the Big 10 and PAC12 basically own the Rose Bowl, none of those conferences will give up the best tv slots. Remeber college football isn't the NFL everyone is fighting each other for tv money and exposure instead of working together for the greater good.

I love it because I love going to the games. I'd much rather go to a game than an overpriced concert or NYE ball. I would rather watch games with friends, too, if my team isn't in it. Dallas and ATL the past two years have been great.

What game did you go too? You actually go to these playoff games that don't include your team?

Until ESPN finds out that ratings for its December 28 CFP suck. Contracts mean little for ESPN. They do what they want.

Remember, the TV contract with the CFP called for NYE semifinals and all that took was 1 bad year of ratings to get changed.

I can't wait till game 2 of the semi final starts at 9.30 and will end around 1am. That will be a real ratings grabber.

I for one enjoy the games on New Years Eve because I don't have to get up for work the next day. I am in the minority but what can I do.

That's a big part of my beef with Monday Night finals, the teams that make the CFP are usually teams that I hate anyways, so I'm not interested to lose sleep over them. If you don't want to butt heads with the NFL on Saturday and Sunday, why not a Friday night?

Really? So what's your interest in Pitt?
I have been a fan since birth. My grandfather played football and is a record holder. My father graduated from and taught at Pitt. My Aunt was a 4 time AA, National Champion, and Panther Award winner.

I hope that qualifies me.

It isn't easy or rational.

I more or less agree with this.

Howie, you're welcome on our board, and have been reasonable over time, but since you think 'Pitt fans are terrible people is like saying the sun is bright' (your post on BWI) is not reasonable and is an outright vile stereotype. Do you really think that Pitt fans are terrible people, or are you just patronizing the crazies on BWI? Pitt fans are like others, some are extreme and irrational, but most are good, and reasonable people. Just because some on that board are arrogant, rude, and vicious (and you know who they are by reading their posts!), do you think all PSU fans are like that? Since you have posted on this board at times, I hope you will take time out to answer.

It popped in my head and I posted it. But seriously, no I don't think all Pitt fans are terrible people and yes, some PSU fans are nuts, and since you read my posts over there, you'll know that I call the nut cases out all the time. These are message boards and stuff gets posted that wouldn't otherwise be said in polite society. I do think the Ped State references are over the top though. Whatever you think about it, as Chris Fowler said during the Rose Bowl, no one is currently at Penn State who had anything to do with it, yet I read post after post about Ped State. No, I repeat, Pitt fans aren't terrible, but that IS terrible.
