In recent updates, he's fallen out of 2 I saw and is 59th in the other. I still think he's a mid to late 2nd Rounder and gets a 2 way deal. The question will be if he thinks he can improve upon that coming back. He's never going to be a 1st Rounder.

I’ll disagree with that. Have seen many players develop between their sophomore and junior years and even as seniors and get drafted in the first round. Justin needs to develop his shot and also is handle. I think his form is very good in terms of shooting the basketball from the perimeter and that could be developed. His handle needs to be improved and grow his ability to drive to the basket. Look what happened to puff Johnson. I never thought he’d be a first round pick when he first came to Pitt.

Lots of players develop between their sophomore and junior years, but Justin really doesn't fit the archetype where you'd expect that kind of improvement. Even if he makes big strides in terms of his shot and handle, he's going to be an opposing coach's wet dream defensively. He doesn't just need to improve his handle and his shot, he needs to become elite or near elite to cover up his horrific deficiencies on the other end. I would be astonished if anybody in the NBA has a first round grade on him and I don't think another year changes that. I like him and I wish him the best, but when I remove my bias and put myself in the shoes of an NBA GM, there's no way I'm giving him a guaranteed contract.

Which is why if you're him, you go now and get the $435K 2 way deal

He will not go to the nba. He needs to improve his outside shot and ball handling. At 6-6 he is not going to be a 4 and to be a 3 In The nba he will need to be able to take bigger and quicker players off the dribble and be deadly on a outside shot. He is not there. He has great instincts and hands. He can rebound and his d is solid when he wants to play d but he will need to improve his game to be a top 25 pick. Coming back and improving his shot and ball control would help a lot not to mention helping a team make the tournament and being a leader which though i think he is has not really worked at so far showing it due to what has happened.

He absolutely can and will improve

10 years ago he would have been entering his redshirt sophomore year at Pitt. How many guys have we seen leap from that point

You become as smart as an NBA GM just by putting on their shoes?

I watched Champ be a turnstile on defense for 2 years in the ACC, you don't need to be an NBA GM to know that isn't going to play in the pros. He doesn't shoot well enough or create enough to overcome that. He really needs to improve his handle and his 3 point shooting if he's going to be a guy who you're okay putting on the floor given that his defense is so far from being acceptable.

As far as Champ getting drafted, the concern with Champ ultimately isn't going to be his shot, ball handling ability, or adjusting to playing on the wing. He has great basketball instincts and does enough things well that somebody will be more than willing to develop that part of his game once he is drafted. The concern with Champ is going to be more about whether or not he has what it takes athletically - lateral quickness, strength, keeping a guy in front of him, etc.

It will be interesting to see if he doesnt get rated to be drafted if he plans to enter the portal and go elsewhere anyway. It's hard to go back to a team after you're told you're not good enough to advance after thinking personally you were.

Lots of kids go through the draft process and return to their team. That’s why they changed the process a few years ago to allow kids like JC to get feedback from the NBA and return to their team.

I think it's almost a sure thing he will return to Pitt if he chooses another year of college hoops.

It's not about being told he isn't good enough. It's about making the most informed decision about his future and career going forward. He's going to make some money playing basketball somewhere. That's a pretty sure thing.

He's long and athletic enough to turn himself into a good perimeter defender. That won't happen at Pitt, but he can improve his offensive skills by staying another year. He needs to show that he is able to shoot the NBA range 3 ball at a fairly consistent rate, and to strengthen his handle. He's a very good player as is but a tweener who will have to be able to play on the perimeter at the next level. I can't see him doing any better than the second half of the second round.

if Champ gets advised against hiring an agent and continuing his college career, it won't be with Pitt. Why would he go down with the ship? He'll be getting triple-teamed in the post next season.

He stated in his announcement that his choice was between returning to Pitt or entering the draft. No mention of transferring to another school.
