• Immediate playing time in one of the country’s premier basketball conferences
• Recently turned a three-star prospect into an All-American
• Ability to be exposed to some of the largest US television markets (New York, Boston, Atlanta, Miami)
• For southern players, it’s a chance to “get away” for college while allowing their family to watch them multiple times a year due to ACC scheduling
Not sure how accurate this is, but I almost feel like this transfer-heavy offseason is a detriment to Pitt. Yes, we can quickly replenish our roster with an abundance of student athletes seeking new schools. At the same time, there’s a record number of players in the portal, meaning there’s also a record number of minutes to be filled.
That means some of our recruiting pitches- immediate playing time, for example- is also being used by most other schools, making it less effective.
how many tournament teams can hit the exact same message?
none of this is compelling or a differentiator. it can be said by dozens of programs
How do you know this? Couldn’t it be possible the coaching staff had something to do with it?
I mean yea maybe a little? You can’t use that as a pitch though, players make players
So player development isn’t a pitch now? An underrecruited guy having a good freshman year, and making a massive leap to being first-team all-ACC as a sophomore isn’t a pitch? Come on now.
I mean yea he can use it, just don’t think a top recruit would put much stock into that. Players make players as I said before, Jeff Capel didn’t magically turn Justin into a star, not to mention all his other recruits have completely flopped or flat out didn’t want to be here anymore
I don’t think recruits look at the transfer portal negatively. A lot of these kids have moved between high schools and AAU teams multiple times during their high school years. So I don’t really think that’s relevant or any kind of negative that’s held against us.
Even with the guys who did enter the portal, you can very much point to the development of X, Toney, and Coulibaly (and even Brown) year-over-year while they were here. You can absolutely sell the development that you had with those guys when they were here.
I would love if he could sell that, this program needs talent, big time talent for Capel to have any chance to succeed even a little bit. His best year as a coach was the Blake Griffin year, he’s not a great game day coach as we’ve seen over and over and over, he NEEDS big time talent to have a chance, he’s shown he can win with first round NBA level talent, the problem is getting those type of guys to Pitt with the state of this program. It’s just scary right now, we have absolutely no direction and it’s been 3 years with Capel, I just hope he lands Reid
So the coach and staff get no credit for player improvement, but all the blame for everything else !
Jeff Capel gets credit for absolutely nothing because he’s done and shown absolutely nothing as a head coach
He could pitch the ideal to a player of contributing some diversity to a team.
its like the stallings era set such a low bar that the last 3 years have been positive.
id love to see us have a great year next but the likelihood of that is almost nil.
i bash on Capel only in response to the apologists out there who put none of this on his shoulders....its year freaking 4 for heavens sake and we have no team.
