It’s pretty amazing that these contracts are so far slanted towards the coaches . Do a good job and a deeper pocket school swoops in , come in and lay an egg and you get fired you still get paid handsomely. ( know anyone ....)
Why not make buyouts so expensive no ones willing to pony up the bucks and insist on full
payment . There’s the old argument that do you want a coach who doesn’t want to be there being your coach when his heart isn’t in it . Why not structure the contract that reduces their pay significantly if they fail to perform up to predetermined standards . You want the big bucks then you need to perform . Reducing their compensation significantly should keep their heart in to it ! If they tanked to get fired , but hired by another school while still being paid enforce the buyout .
Paying guys millions per yr will always get you plenty of good candidates.

Why not make this simple ! Why is simple so hard!

When a college coach signs a contract he stays at that school for the duration of the contract.
If he decides to leave, he can leave, with no compensation, but he can't coach another team until the expiration date on his contract similar to a non-compete agreement.

If the university fires him, they pay the man, and he's free to pursue other opportunities unless it was firing for cause.

Eliminate the buy-out because it doesn't mean anything.

College sports shouldn't be like Corporate America or Pro Sports because it isn't, it's college sports.

Players should go to the University that they want to play for but unfortunately they follow coaches so coaches should be forced to honor their agreements.

College sports isn't the free market since it's a non profit, University based, for the general welfare of the student athlete, a state and federally funded educational and sports activity.

This way programs can plan for coaching changes eliminating the disruption when a coach decides to leave after year 1 or 2 of his six year contract.

It does amaze me how there’s no bad blood in college athletics when they constantly poach others successful coaches . A contract should be a contract !
I can understand an escape clause if your seriously moving up like from D2 to D1 or a low D1 to a P6 program , or to your alma mater , but from VT to Texas A&M no way .
