I watched our game vs Nova, and the Nits vs Kent St. and came to one glaring conclusion.
Kent was very poorly coached and Nova was extremely well coached.
The Kent coach played three Qb's, and he stated before the game that he would do that.
They were in the red zone throughout the day and continually shot themselves in the foot
when in easy FG range...penalties, ill advised sacks, poor play calling. At worse, it should
have been 26 - 19 throughout most of the fourth qtr. In fact, they could have even led at that pt.
They had no offensive consistency because of the QB rotation. Two of the three even
did pretty well given the circumstances. One thing they did do well was they tried to
stop the run and gave up the pass. PSU to it's credit has good WR's and Goodwin is
a real threat. Despite concentrating on the run, Barkley still gained 100+. Kent ST IMO was
as bad a coached team I've ever seen.

On the other hand, Tally's Nova team executed beautifully (despite the talent difference).
They stacked the box. and dared Peterman to beat them with his arm. They matched up
with our weakest area, our WR's and did ok given the circumstances. Who wins between
Nova and Kent ST?...IMO a tossup with a lean towards Nova.

Sagarin's pre-season ratings would agree. Nova by 3 over Kent neutral site.

Villanova would probably win that one. Not sure why their HC never went up an FBS school. They always look very well coached.
KSU probably has more depth, but depth isn't really needed on Week 1.

-Villanova gave up 16 points per game last year on defense. Dont have a link as I couldnt find one but that might be the best defensive team in the country in FCS last year.

-Penn State is working on shutting down the Shotgun run up the middle. That is Pitt's #1 go to play now..........

Nova is slightly better but that doesnt mean much. Both Pitt and PSU looked terrible. Actually the teams played similarly.

- Both D's didnt give up a TD. Kent State did manage 2 FGs

- The Pitt and PSU offenses both scored 3 TDs and gave up 1

- PSU had a few more yards of offense and gave up a few more yards of defense.

Pitt and PSU look very even. A play here or there, a fumble here, a penalty there should decide it.

Can we stop the read option? Our linebackers worry the shit outta me truthfully. I think we will have a few surprises too. Definitely new things we haven't seen yet. Also another big thing to watch will be can out DB's hang one on one with psu 's wide outs. We have to get pressure. Is Hendricks gonna be available?

I'm sorry but the nits defense had many holes in it. Kent State had plenty of running lanes but did themselves in with penalties and very bad coaching.

The nits had to blitz many times in the second half to gain control of the game. Let that sink in. They were playing one of the worst offensive teams in college football playing three different quarterbacks and needed to blitz. Kent State moved the ball on them at times pretty well I thought.

Pitt will have holes and opportunity. It's up to the coaches and players to exploit them and execute.

Now here's the million $$$$ question. Who's the better coached team. Vilanova or Penn State? I would imagine the nits to stack the line like nova but with that coach and staff, who knows.

Nova has a better head coach, than either Pitt or PSU, expect Duzz to continue to get better, expect Franklin to be fired and at Kent soon

Actually they gave up 18.4 points per game, which ranked them 11th in FCS. Dartmouth was first at 10.1.
