Congrats to Coach Powell, Special Teams Coach of the Year

frankly, he was the beneficiary of Quadree Henderson being on the team.

Our punter was average, our coverage teams were ok, and our PK did hit a very important FG, but was 60% and had two kicks blocked.

This is Henderson's award more than Powell's.

I disagree...

First, the guy is extremely energetic and passionate. Even without success, you have to love his fire.

Second, he calls the plays that gets Quadree the lanes to get free. Lots of teams have fast athletic kick returners (I am guessing all do), but our shined a bit brighter. Punter? You are dissing Powell for our punter being average?

Our coverage teams were better than average. No one is saying that QH didn't have a great season but give credit where it is due!

We beat Clemson with a field goal in the final seconds. That long of a field goal can be blocked so the coach needs to make sure the best blockers are out there and they are in the correct place to eliminate penetration up the middle.

I like Powell.... but lets be honest. if Q wasnt on the team, Powell doesnt smell this award.

Except the year before Maddox had a return for a TD and averaged 30 yards a return and Boyd averaged 25 yards a return as well. Coach Powell is VERY important to Q's results.

Obviously our return game was special with QH, but I thought our coverage teams did a nice job all year, despite our punting (see below). What was the longest KO or punt return we even gave up?

On the other hand, Winslow was not good. I lost count of the low line drives right down the middle of the field. His average net this year was 36.1, which ranked #99 out of the #128 teams. 24 schools had a net of over 40 yards.

Name one guy who could get this award without having an outstanding player like Henderson. Quadree was obviously the biggest reason but not the only reason. And doesn't it shock you a little to see our punting unit ended up in the top quarter of the country with a punter who is as horrible as some fans say? Maybe our punter wasn't that bad after all.

Obviously Henderson was phenomenal. I'd agree our punter was average, more likely below average, and our PK was also average even considering the very important made FG. But I think you are really selling our coverage teams short, I thought they did a very good job for most of the season.

70+ yarder to PSU with the score 14-0... which let them back in the game.

Our net punting average was 99th of 128 teams. Don't know what stats you're looking at.

So throw any 10 guys out there with Henderson

Big Marty you are right. And I am 100% certain that Coach Powell would be the first person to give the credit to ALL OF HIS SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS - not just QH.

QH is a very special athlete and like his coach gives a lot of credit to his teammates. TEAM is a concept that is missing from a lot of today's young players.

You don't have to look any further that the players who are skipping their bowl games.

The "What is in it for ME?" attitude is ruining sports for a lot of people.

seemed to me there were a sigiificant number of starters on the kick and punt teams. But Pitt did have a real big time returner in the Q. But Pitt special teams did make many positive contributions to the wins

Lopes also had a huge kick return in the Uva game when they kicked away from QH. Then he had another one another time of the season that was called back due to a penalty that could have gone either way. How often is there a long special teams play and a penalty negates it, and that didn't happen on any of QHs returns or really on any any special teams play other than the one I noted.

Also, I thought the punt and kick coverage was A material all year. The Clemson game in particular I remember Matthews being everywhere as the gunner. QH definitely helped him get the award, but come on, do you remember PC's special teams???????

Plus I remember very few muffs the last 2 years on returns, other than surprisingly Boyd. I saw a photo of Maddox sometime during the year where he was fielding a punt in practice and Powell is squiring him in his face with a water bottle to help them deal with distractions as a punt returner. Those things make a difference.

Special teams are like OL in alot of ways, that when you aren't hearing bad things it means they are doing well, and there were very few negative plays from the ST, with a bevy of huge ones.

Kudos to Powell!
