Correlation or Coincidence? Capel ACC record with and without Blake Hinson has the same amount of Wins.

As the complete lack of any major attempts at adjustments go by game after game (this season specifically), I’m starting to switch my opinion of Jeff Capel, and I’m wondering if anyone else is experiencing this paradigm shift this year?

Before the season, my opinion landed in the camp of “Decent Coach, Decent recruiter, good leader, inherited a completely dismantled program, recognizing overlooked talent pretty well, building a sustainable program.”

Where it stands today, the needle is shifting hard and fast in the other direction, and I’m not sure if I’m overreacting or not. My main issue seems to be his unwillingness to change anything (lineups, offensive sets, X/O stuff, etc.), and I’m getting a Groundhog Day experience.

Digging deeper, I’m also worried that he hit a needle in a haystack situation with Blake Hinson, and even if he is good at certain things you’d want from your coach, his blemishes are showing, and negatively impacting results more than anything Capel might actually be good at.

Capel’s ACC record with Hinson is 26-14 (.650).

Capel’s ACC record without Hinson is 26-60 (.302).

Could it really be this simple? Capel seems like a good guy, definitely not a bad leader or recruiter or anything, but just isn’t good at coaching basketball or developing players?

Basically did Hinson just save Capel’s A$$ and that’s that?

No your are not wrong. Capel is just not a good college coach. He treats the team like its the NBA. He doesnt seem to know what to do as far as getting the players to execute any type of defensive or offensive game plan. Most of times it appears as there is no plan for either.

Pitt just isn’t that good, outside of foul shooting they don’t do anything very well, can’t shoot from perimeter well, can’t rebound well, don’t play good defense, can’t defend the 3, can’t inbound under pressure well, they are just not that good

I said the last two seasons that, although I wouldn't be able to find anything to quantify it with, it seemed like the opposition would get better shots than us on a pretty consistent basis. The difference was that Blake Hinson would often make contested threes at a better clip than opponents would make less contested shots.

To me, getting/preventing the other team from getting good looks is a pretty solid coaching barometer. You can't make the shots for the team, but you can have them in a position to succeed.

Capel is incapable of getting more out of the players we have. The only formula that has worked during his tenure is when we have had legit 3-point threats. Hinson last year; Hinson, Cummings and Elllot the year before. The one glaring difference this year versus the rest of his tenure is just how bad the defense and rebounding have been.
