Coulibaly

What a fine game he played tonight.Very sold. And has nice touch for a big man.Still picks up too many tricky tak fouls though.Brown has finally found his role on this team and is doing well in it.Great win!
If he had just a quicker step, he would be really good. I'm not complaining and think we will continue to improve, but if he can get a little more athletic, he is going to be a plus center.

And AKC has come a long way. Not to rip on TB, as he had some clutch baskets for us, but there seemed to be a sequence where JC hit a 10-12 foot pull back and the very next possession TB took the same shot near same position with much different result. AKC has shown better shooting ability outside the rim. It is better to have TB than an open ship, but last night made me appreciate AKC a whole lot more and am excited about his development the next two years. Femi also impressed and at least tried to drive rather than take off balance and rushed shots, cough cough. I loved his energy at the end too. Seemed like he was asserting his dominance vocally. Should be a leader of the team down the road.

Coulibaly was involved in one of my favorite plays/sequences from the game last night.

He was hustling back on D and Duke tried the throw ahead for an easy 2. Coulibaly got back and deflected the pass. Champ gathered the loose ball and got it to X.

We had a 3 on 3 going the other way and instead of forcing the issue, X pulled up and held onto the ball and ended up hitting a trailing Champ at the top of the key for a 3.

Twice he established position and was called for a block

He really only had 1 bad foul (the hedge )
they drew a set of block refs last night...both teams..which, for the most part, I am happier with than the charge refs...especially when playing the Sultans of Flop..

I say this a lot about Coulibaly but you can see the real difference in him is that he's played a lot of high level competition for winning teams in international tournaments.

In 2016 he played at the FIBA U17s worlds and averaged 15 and 7. In 2018 he played in the FIBA U18 African championship and averaged 13.6 and 11 and Mali won their first ever title. Then in 2019 he played in the FIBA U19 World Cup and we all know what happened there where he averaged 13 and 7 and led Mali all of the way to the final against the US team with Cunningham, Suggs, Barnes, Robinson-Earl, and Trevion Williams.

He's not an elite athlete but he's an efficient player on both ends and very smart. He's a useful starting center in the ACC as a true sophomore in part because he just has more experience than other players in his class.

I would take an average vertical over the quicker step. With his build, he should be flushing those balls in close.

He's smart and he plays hard. He will continue to improve.

Great team guy.
And that's what was said about him from the beginning. And those were his words as well.
Definitely can't underestimate that value.
I really like that he makes me laugh when he can't believe they call fouls on him.

He's getting better, but before we get too excited, he had 0 points and 2 rebounds in the first half last night, then in the first four minutes of the second half he had 5 points and 3 rebounds, and then for the rest of the game he had 1 point and 0 rebounds.

That's four minutes of really good, and the rest of the game of not a whole heck of a lot. Especially since he was absolutely lost when Duke made him defend on the perimeter.

Totally agree. I'm not one of the posters getting
"excited." He did have 6 pt's and 7 rebounds.
It wouldn't be too bad if Brown would do
something....he had 0, yes ZERO rebounds
last night, along with 4 pts. and 2 blocks.
That's an improvement over their combined
5 rebounds and combined 4 pts vs Syracuse.

Coulibaly has a long way to go. Together with
Brown they IMO form a barely passable duo
at Center, What I do like about Coulibaly is
his constant hustle. He does give us a presence
inside, but he's often out of position defensively.
What's saving us inside is the fact that Champ
is rebounding like a 7 footer, and Toney is
playing way over his 6'6" height. Tony IMO is a
terror inside, and is our best defensive player.
I do feel Coulibay will continue to improve.
