Court says schools can't pay athletes for names and likeness

I dont agree with it but its great news for the NCAA.

This is now almost like the USFL antitrust "win." They won but were paid $1. O'Bannon won the antitrust case but its not going to change anything monetarily.

Im not sure where it goes from here. If they cant pay the playes 5K per year, does this mean schooks can no longer use their NILs? Inotherwords, no more game jerseys, billboards, commercials, etc?

I know some schools are just using generic #1, #12, or the year (#15 this year) on the jerseys now and going forward so they don't have to deal with this.

And I guess behind the scenes some of the star players are complaining because they don't see their jersey numbers on the store racks anymore.

But yeah, I have the same questions as you.

So if I'm Fournette down at LSU, I can't jump to the NFL and get paid because there's a rule that says you can't but he can't earn anything more than his "degree" for staying at LSU. Furthermore, they're already pressuring the kid to not sit a year.

Sorry, but this is just wrong for so many reasons.

The NFL has the rule that he can't play until 3 years after college, not the NCAA.

He can always go to Europe or some other lower level league if he wants to earn cash.

They'd have to pressure the NFL to change their rules.

Expect it to go to Supreme Court, the NCAA has lost there before in a number of matters. Schools own Property rights was established in 1980s and changed how NCAA Televised Games was removed and Schools and Conferences took over. The NCAA also lost when they tried to set up Coaching Pay Scales and was not allow to do it.

The key here is how the Court will rule Individual Players Rights versus School Property Rights, and can they be signed away when accepting a Scholarship?

We shall see?

I'm aware of whose rule it is but let's face it, the rule was created to pacify and maintain the free NFL minor league.

And going to Europe makes no sense in the context of this conversation. The risk versus reward isn't there. Would be better off finding a trainer and getting a part time job.

Players have jumped to Canada before they became "eligible" to join the NFL, however.
