Recruiting perception
The gurus determine the 'winners' and 'losers' of recruiting. The stars they assign are an indication of talent. And, yes, stars do matter, but they are not the be all, end all, of on-field results. Obviously, talent is a necessary ingredient to winning, as the Alabamas, Fla Sts, Ohio Sts, etc show, but coaches also have the insight for lesser-profiled recruits that 'fit' into their system and needs, and some develop better and coach better overall. The K Sts, Dukes, Mich Sts, etc. of the world still win without many 4 or 5 stars. Penn St kicked our asses in recruiting head-to-head this year on paper, and we fans recognize that (as do theirs). But, our staff did a good job in a short period of time, especially filling needs and establishing some depth at certain positions. My positive look at it says Pitt had a decent recruiting year, and with the 'young' players that are returning, have an opportunity to have a successful season. If the coaches are competent, as we anticipate, the future will get brighter with each passing class. What I love about the 'rivalry' with Penn St for recruits and attention is that we are in a David vs. Goliath situation when we play each other. Penn St is the local 'Goliath' and should hand us our asses on the field, with all the talent they're accumulating, but if they don't, they will have no answers and their credibility will diminish quickly, and the tide will turn. I will savor all the bragging and arrogance they show, and bide my time till the games. In the meantime, Pitt football has gained excitement, and the new staff has a chance to show their competence soon. I can't wait for spring practice now that the recruiting wars are over.
