I attended the game yesterday. It was extremely disappointing. My wife and I spent the rest of the day with more enjoyable activities.
My thoughts about the game and future follow.
I tend to agree with what Dick Groat said after the game. Groat said the team needs to deal with the reality of playing without Luther.
They not only miss his talent and experience, they miss being able to play the style they were prepared to played with Luther the key.
They need to figure out what our style of play will be with Luther gone.
There are huge holes in the team. We need a point guard and a physical interior presence. Look at this team. It is hard to find where 60 consistent points will come from.
Stallings started who I would have yesterday. The results were disastrous. Pitt played too deep into the shot clock. Tech’s run could have been stopped but Frame was blocked twice inside and Stevenson was blocked on a layup. Pitt was hurt early by players other than Lammers and Okogie.
The press seemed to help. It created some energy.
Stallings seems upset by the play of Frame, Brown and Stevenson. I don’t know why Davis has seen his playing time diminish (He has to take his open shots). Stallings needs to decide who to play and how much.
Where do we go from here? No alternatives are anywhere near good.
I would start Carr, Stewart, Davis, Stevenson and Kene. Frame would come in off the bench and immediately go back to the bench if he continues to shoot shots when he is not set.
Pitt needs to take the first good shot available. That applies to everyone, even Kene. We are not good late in the shot clock.
Stewart needs to take more than 3 shots. He needs to be more assertive and his team needs to look for him more. Stevenson ran himself into a turnover yesterday with Stewart wide open. When scoring becomes a problem and frustration sets in, we need to draw up a play for Stewart (not Frame) rather than have Stevenson, Frame or Carr force things.
At this point, we are a jump shooting team. We need to accept that. Not accepting it makes matters worse. To be clear, I am not saying Stevenson, Frame and Carr should never drive to the basket. They should limit their efforts to do it to when the opportunity presents itself rather than feeling they have to because no one is scoring.
Hopefully, next season with Luther back, some re-enforcements and additional strength and experience gained this season, the team will be on better footing.
After yesterday’s disaster, Stallings needs to make some serious decisions on how and with who best to proceed.
