Outside of the Duke game the defense has become respectable and may be a team strength now.
They played well against Dungy despite giving up 30 some points. held UVA in check, played a strong ND team as well as anyone, limited VTech and played outstanding against a very good wake offense.
They played the wake game without a number of starters which is a testament to the depth they've built. Pinnock looks like hes going to be very good, Hamlin is starting to play up to his recruiting ranking, young guys like Bright, Pine and Reynolds are getting PT and playing well. They should be even better with a year under Bates and most of the D returning and some young talent developing.
I bashed Bates but I think hes made some nice tweaks to Duzz defense. Overall hes played more aggressive with more blitzes. Hes mixed up the base with the Nickel. If you were at the Wake game you saw the substitutions were crisp and well planned and they played a lot of guys.
It's been fun watching games knowing we have a chance to stop the other teams offense and make some splash plays on D
